Dhoni, additionally, made headlines ahead of the auction after getting retained as an 'Uncapped' player , with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja getting the top retentions at Rs 18 crore each. Sri Lankan pace sensation Matheesha Pathirana and Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube were the other players retained, at Rs 13 crore and Rs 12 crore respectively.

How Chennai Super Kings had fared in the previous IPL season

Wicketkeeper-batter Ruturaj Gaikwad succeeded Dhoni as the captain after the latter quietly stepped down from the role ahead of the 17th season, and his journey as captain of the five-time champions was off to a positive start . CSK defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans in its first two games, and were in the top-half of the table after collecting four wins in their first six matches of the season.

Things, however, started going downhill for them following back-to-back losses against Lucknow Super Giants in a space of four days, with the Super Kings failing to defend a target in both games. They were playing catch-up from thereon and eventually found themselves in a must-win situation against ‘Kaveri’ rivals RCB at the Chinnaswamy in their final league match of the season.

It wasn’t even a victory that CSK needed to qualify for the playoffs – they simply needed to score 201 runs after the Royal Challengers posted 218 on the board. And at the crease were a well-set Ravindra Jadeja along with a legendary finisher in ‘MSD’.

Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, however, bowled the over of a lifetime, dismissing Dhoni right after getting hit for a six and conceding just one run in the remaining four deliveries to not only knock the five-time champions out of the tournament and send RCB into the playoffs , but to also redeem himself for his forgettable over to Rinku Singh in Ahmedabad in the previous season.
