The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a medical update on India batter Shreyas Iyer, who was injured during the third ODI against Australia on October 25. Iyer suffered a blunt injury to his abdomen while taking a catch, which led to internal bleeding and resulted in him being admitted to a hospital.

BCCI’s update on Iyer

The BCCI statement confirmed that the injury was identified quickly, and a minor procedure was carried out to stop the bleeding. Iyer received immediate medical attention and has since undergone the required treatment. The BCCI said the 30-year-old is now stable and recovering well.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same,” the statement read.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly,” the statement concluded.

Iyer was rushed to the hospital soon after sustaining the injury and did not take the field to bat in the third and final ODI, where Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli guided India to a record run chase. The Indian vice-captain was initially kept in the ICU as a precaution before being shifted to a regular ward. His family later arrived in Sydney to be by his side during recovery.
