The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28 at its headquarters in Mumbai. During this meeting, elections will take place for all top positions on the board, including the post of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) chairman.
While elections will be held for the posts of President, Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer, a PTI report suggests that only the President’s position will see a change, while the others are likely to retain their jobs. Former India cricketer Roger Binny has reportedly stepped down as the BCCI's President after he turned 70 in July.
According to the BCCI’s constitution, any officer bearer who turns 70 during the course of his/her tenure must vacate the post. Reports suggest that the BCCI is looking to elect a former cricketer to the top position as Binny’s replacement. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was the BCCI President before Binny.
Meanwhile, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal is also expected to leave the position as he has already completed three years. In addition, members of the Apex Committee and General Body, as well as representatives of the Indian Cricketers Association, will also be elected on the same day.
Shukla, Saikia, and others to continue?
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who has worked for a total of three years, two years and three months as joint secretary and nine months as secretary, is expected to continue in his role. Saikia was chosen as secretary in January this year after Jay Shah became the chairman of the International Cricket Council.
Vice-President Rajeev Shukla is also likely to retain his post, despite earlier reports suggesting that he might become the BCCI President. However, fresh reports claim that the tradition of appointing a former cricketer to the top position is likely to continue. Rohan Desai and Prabhtej Bhatia are also expected to continue as Joint Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
