The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has “strongly refuted” allegations of physical abuse leveled against current women’s captain Nigar Sultana ‘Joty’ by pacer Jahanara Alam, describing them as “baseless, fabricated and devoid of any truth”.
Alam, who has not represented the Tigresses in any format since December last year, had claimed in an interview with a Bangladeshi daily Kaler Kantho that Joty had “beat up” her junior teammates.
“This is nothing new. Joty beats up the juniors a lot,” Alam claimed in the interview. “Even during this World Cup, the juniors told me, ‘No, I won’t do this again. Then I’ll have to get slapped again.’ I heard from some people, ‘I got beaten up yesterday.’ Even during the Dubai tour, she called a junior into the room and slapped her.”
BCB refutes pacer’s allegations
The BCB, however, slammed the seamer for making “derogatory and scandalous claims” at a time when the senior women’s team was exhibiting progress.
“The BCB categorically and strongly refutes these allegations, which are baseless, fabricated and devoid of any truth,” the board said in a statement. “The Board finds it unfortunate that such derogatory and scandalous claims have been made at a time when the Bangladesh Women’s Team is showing commendable progress and unity on the international stage,” read a statement from the board.
“The Board believes that the timing and nature of these comments are deliberate, ill-intentioned and seemingly aimed at undermining the spirit and confidence of a team that continues to represent the country with pride. It is deeply disappointing that an individual who currently has no involvement or relevance in the plans of Bangladesh cricket has chosen to make such misleading statements in public.”
“The BCB wishes to make it clear that it has complete trust and confidence in the Women’s National Team’s leadership, players and management. The Board has found no evidence to support any of the claims made and stands firmly behind the team and its personnel,” it added.

It’s not just the board that hit back at Alam, who has collected 108 wickets across 135 international appearances, including 83 T20Is, in an international career spanning more than a decade. Joty hit back at her teammate for her “personal grudges” and “harsh language”.
“Just because I’m not saying anything doesn’t mean I can’t speak, or that there’s nothing to say! This team belongs to all of us. It’s painful to see so many negative statements, personal grudges, anger, and harsh language when the team is actually going through its best phase,” Joty wrote in a post on Facebook.
“I’m really surprised because many of those making such comments once loved and protected this team, helped build it up, and witnessed both its triumphs and failures!
“When someone is dropped from the team or goes out of form, and a new option replaces them, suddenly everything about the team — its people, its environment — starts to seem bad to them!” Joty added.
“Respect goes to those who have continued to trust this team and its members! Even if spreading rumours brings temporary attention, I hope it won’t have any lasting impact,” she added.
