From bottle-gate to big matches: India’s historic arena Barabati Stadium ready for another showdown

The Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha, is one of India’s oldest and most emotional cricket venues. Every time India play here, the atmosphere becomes loud, colourful, and full of passion. But along with great support, the stadium has also seen some dramatic and controversial moments in its long history.

A stadium with a long cricketing history

Barabati hosted its first international match in 1982 when England played India in an ODI. Since then, it has been a regular venue for big white-ball games.
It has also hosted Test cricket in the past, but only two games.

After that, the ground became mostly a white-ball venue. In ODIs, the stadium has hosted 20 matches, with the first match held in 1982 and the most recent in February 2025 between England and India. T20I cricket came here in 2015.

T20I results at Barabati Stadium

Only three T20 internationals have been played here so far. India’s T20I record has been very poor at the Barabati Stadium. They have won just one game out of three at the venue, which came against Sri Lanka in 2017.

The controversy that rocked Indian cricket

One game that people still talk about is the India vs South Africa T20I in 2015. India collapsed from 43/2 to 92 all out, and this angered sections of the crowd. Fans started throwing bottles onto the field during South Africa’s chase, forcing the match to stop many times. This remains one of the most infamous moments in Indian cricket.

Barabati Stadium pitch report

The Barabati Stadium pitch is known to help both batters and spinners, but at different stages of the match. Early in the innings, the wicket has good pace and bounce, so the ball comes nicely onto the bat. As the match goes on, the black-soil surface slows down, making it tougher to hit big shots.

Spinners often come into play in the middle overs. The average T20 score here is usually around 160-180. Boundaries are about 65-70 metres, which means bowlers always have a chance. Fast bowlers who use clever variations and tight lines tend to do well here.

The weather in Cuttack will be clear in the evening, but it will also be very cold with the temperature going down to around 12°C. Bowlers could have some difficulty in both innings because there will be dew.

Facilities and stadium experience

Barabati Stadium is not the newest stadium in India, so the infrastructure isn’t as modern as big metros cities. However, it still remains one of the most iconic venues in India, given the history. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 45,000 and has floodlights. Because no IPL matches are played there, the facilities are a bit basic, including the dressing rooms and practice area.

Cuttack does not have its own airport, so teams often travel an hour from Bhubaneshwar for matches, which has always been a point of complaint for visiting sides. The End names here are Mahanadi River End and Pavilion End.
