Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul has condemned the Board of Control for Cricket India’s (BCCI) decision to remove fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as he said that the country should be playing its upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 matches in Sri Lanka and not India. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Mustafizur Rahman on Saturday on the BCCI's instructions.
While the BCCI secretary did not say anything openly, he hinted that the decision was being taken due to the rise in attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. As a result, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) held an emergency meeting on Saturday night, and has decided to seek ICC’s help in shifting its T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India to Sri Lanka.
BCB has also decided to write to BCCI to seek reasons for removing Mustafizur Rahman, a contracted player, from the IPL.
Bangladesh on IPL row: ‘Days of slavery are over’
In a Facebook post daring India and the BCCI, Asif Nazrul said that the “days of slavery are over” and that the Bangladesh cricket team should not play its matches in India.
“As the adviser in charge of the Sports Ministry, I asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board to explain the entire matter to ICC in written. The board should inform that where a Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India despite being contracted, the entire Bangladeshi cricket team cannot feel safe going to play in the World Cup,” Asif wrote.
“I have also instructed the board to request that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches should be held in Sri Lanka,” he added.
Nazrul added that efforts are being made to stop the broadcast of IPL matches in Bangladesh.
“I have requested the Information and Broadcasting Adviser to stop broadcasting of IPL tournament in Bangladesh. We will not accept any insult to Bangladeshi cricket, cricketers and Bangladesh under any circumstances. The days of slavery are over.”
All eyes are on the ICC on how they will handle this matter. Pakistan are already playing all their matches in Sri Lanka.
