India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has finally broken the silence on why the management did not pick Arshdeep Singh in the first two T20Is of the ongoing five-match series against Australia. India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is, Arshdeep, returned to the playing XI for the third match at Hobart, taking three wickets as India secured a series-levelling five-wicket win.
However, his absence from the first two matches became a big controversy as former cricketers called out Team India coach Gautam Gambhir. Arshdeep also missed most of the matches in the Asia Cup 2025 as India won the final against Pakistan.
Morkel explains why Arshdeep is not playing T20Is regularly
With his absence from the team becoming a major issue among fans, Morkel explained on Wednesday that Arshdeep is invaluable to the team, but the changes are made keeping the future in mind as the coach and captain Suryakumar Yadav wants to try out other combinations.
“Arshdeep is experienced. He understands that there is also a bigger picture where we are trying different combinations,” Morkel said ahead of the fourth T20I against Australia. “He is a world-class bowler and has taken the most wickets for us in the powerplay, so we know how valuable he is to the team.
“But for us on the day, on this tour, it is also to have a look at other combinations, and he understands that.”
Morkel also revealed that Nitish Kumar Reddy could be available for the fourth T20I on Thursday at the Gold Coast stadium in Queensland. Reddy suffered a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide.
“He did all his work that was needed or expected of him today. Fielding, batting, bowling - he ticked all of that. We will find out now, after the assessment, where he is at.”
