Legendary Indian spinner and Anshul Kamboj’s teammate at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ravichandran Ashwin, has compared the 24-year-old fast bowler to the likes of Zaheer Khan and Jaspirt Bumrah as the Haryana cricketer gets ready for his Test debut for India. The CSK fast bowler Anshul Kamboj was added to the India squad after injuries to Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep. He is expected to make his debut in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, which starts on 23 July.
One thing that Anshul Kamboj will need more than anything on his debut would be to understand his role and execute the team’s plans.
Ashwin: ‘Kamboj understands team plans’
Ashwin, who worked closely with Kamboj at CSK, compared the young fast bowler to Zaheer and Bumrah and added that the Haryana cricketer has a good understanding of how traps are laid for batters during a match.
“The most appreciable thing about Anshul Kamboj is that he understands the plan. I have seen so many bowlers who, even after playing 30–40 Test matches, still don’t understand the plan,” Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel. “If you ask them about the plan, they just say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game.
“Because they don’t understand the plan. That is one type of bowling. The other is bowling according to the plan. Anshul Kamboj understands the plan and also knows how to execute it in the middle.”
“I have seen that. It’s not a trait a lot of fast bowlers have. Zaheer Khan was one of them—he was amazing. Jassi is another one. He understands the plan, makes plans, and executes them to perfection. Anshul Kamboj belongs to that variety.”
‘Anshul Kamboj will make Indian bowling attack serious’
Ashwin went on to add that Kamboj’s addition will make Indian bowling a “serious” attack. “With Bumrah and Siraj there, if you are bringing in Anshul Kamboj into the playing XI, I’m telling you, it’s a serious bowling attack,” Ashwin added.
The former spinner, who recently retired from international cricket, also analysed how Kamboj has done recently and that will hold him in good stead.
“People can say that Anshul Kamboj will be playing his first Test. But he was there with India A. He has been in cracking form in first-class cricket. He averaged around 13 last season and even bagged 10 wickets in an innings. He had a kick-ass Duleep Trophy,” Ashwin said.
