Indian American physician Dr Tina Shah has formally entered the Democratic primary contest for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, positioning herself as a healthcare-focused challenger in one of the state’s most competitive political battlegrounds.

Her candidacy places her among a crowded Democratic field seeking to unseat Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr, while also marking her as the only Indian American in the race so far.

If successful, Shah would make history as the first Indian American to represent New Jersey in the US House of Representatives, adding to a small group of Indian American lawmakers nationally despite the community’s growing population and political engagement.

Shah’s healthcare-first campaign

Shah has framed her campaign around healthcare affordability, patient access and reproductive rights, drawing directly from her professional background as a physician and health policy leader.

In announcing the momentum behind her campaign, she said, “I am so proud of the support our campaign has earned. New Jerseyans want leaders who put patients over industry profits. Our campaign is about serving working families, not special interests.”

She has openly criticised both US President Donald Trump’s healthcare approach and her Republican opponent, portraying Kean Jr as disconnected from district concerns.

Her campaign messaging emphasises what she describes as a system tilted toward profits rather than patients, an argument she links to national debates over insurance regulation, abortion access and healthcare funding.

According to her campaign platform, “As a doctor, she refuses to stand by while Donald Trump and RFK Jr gut our healthcare and undermine lifesaving medical research, and career politicians like Tom Kean Jr. do nothing to lower healthcare costs and instead vote to gut Medicaid and ban lifesaving procedures like abortion.”

Shah’s fundraising surge and a high-stakes Democratic primary

Shah’s entry has been accompanied by significant financial momentum. Her campaign announced that she has raised $1,017,000 since launching her bid in July 2025, crossing the $1 million threshold faster than most of her competitors.

She reported $604,000 in the third quarter and an additional $413,000 in the fourth quarter, making her one of the strongest fundraisers in the Democratic field despite being a relatively new entrant.

In another statement, Shah said, “New Jerseyans are demanding leaders who will put patients over industry profits. Our campaign is fighting to serve hardworking families, not Donald Trump’s billionaire buddies or special interests, and that’s why I will flip NJ-07 in November.”

By the end of last year, her campaign reported close to $650,000 in cash on hand. The race is shaping up to be one of the most expensive House primaries in New Jersey history, with multiple Democratic candidates already surpassing the $1 million fundraising mark.

The coming county convention season is expected to play a crucial role as local party organisations consider endorsements, with fundraising strength likely to weigh heavily in those decisions.

What we know about Shah’s career

A triple board-certified physician in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care, Shah brings extensive clinical and policy experience to the race.

She has served in senior healthcare roles under three US administrations, including work during the Obama and Biden years.

As a senior advisor to the US Surgeon General, she helped develop the federal government’s first strategy aimed at addressing clinician burnout.

During her tenure at the Department of Veterans Affairs, she became the agency’s first National Director of Clinician Wellbeing, focusing on improving electronic medical records and expanding access to primary care for veterans.

Her career later moved into the private sector, where she became the first Chief Clinical Officer of a healthcare-focused artificial intelligence company, working to reduce administrative burdens so clinicians could spend more time with patients.

In New Jersey, she has also led efforts to prevent insurance companies from denying essential care.

Shah’s endorsements, and the road ahead

Shah’s campaign received a notable boost in December last year when Congressman Ami Bera endorsed her candidacy.

Announcing his support, Bera said, “I am proud to endorse Dr Tina Shah for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th District. As a fellow physician, I know she understands the healthcare crisis – and will bring real-world tested solutions to lower costs and make it easier for every New Jerseyan and American to get quality healthcare. I look forward to welcoming her to the Congressional Doctors Caucus.”

Shah responded to the endorsement by saying, “I’m honoured to have Congressman Bera’s support.”

She added, “As a physician and a national leader on healthcare policy, Congressman Bera understands exactly what’s at stake for families as Trump, RFK Jr, and Congressional Republicans gut our healthcare. I look forward to joining Congressman Bera in the Congressional Doctors Caucus to continue my life’s work of increasing access to high-quality, affordable healthcare.”

A second-generation Indian American and daughter of immigrants, Shah has spoken about her parents’ journey to North America in search of opportunity, tying her personal story to her political motivations.

She has said she is running “to rebuild trust in government, expand access to care, and fight back against dangerous ideologies with science, empathy, and common sense.”

With New Jersey’s 7th District remaining a perennial swing seat and national control of Congress potentially at stake, Shah’s candidacy places healthcare, reproductive rights and insurance reform at the centre of a closely watched Democratic primary as the 2026 election cycle in the United States accelerates.
