In a chilling daylight murder that has jolted Bihar, notorious gangster Chandan Mishra was gunned down inside the ICU of Patna’s high-profile Paras Hospital.

A now-viral CCTV footage from the upscale hospital shows five men entering the corridor one after another. Four of them are seen wearing caps, seemingly to conceal their identities. One, however, walks in openly — his face uncovered, gun in hand, and a calm, unreadable expression.

Moments later, the group draws their weapons and walks into Mishra’s room, firing multiple shots at close range and escaping seemingly unfazed. Mishra died on the spot.

The man at the front of the hit squad was soon identified by police as Tauseef Badshah.

Who is he? How did he execute the cold-blooded murder inside the premier hospital? And how has the act stirred a political storm in Bihar? Here’s what we know so far.

How did the murder unfold at the Bihar hospital?

A total of six men arrived at Patna’s Paras Hospital early Thursday morning, according to an India Today report quoting officials. They came on two motorcycles. Five of them, all armed, walked in. One stayed outside.

Initially, the group was stopped at the emergency gate by hospital security, who asked for their gate passes. None of them had any. Instead of arguing, the men quietly slipped in through the OPD. From there, they headed straight to Room Number 209, Chandan Mishra’s ICU cabin.

Mishra, a gangster with 24 criminal cases against him, including a dozen murders, was out on parole. He’d been admitted to Paras Hospital for medical treatment and was under police watch.

But just before 7:30 am, the five men entered the ICU without much resistance, pulled out their weapons, and opened fire at close range. Moments later, they vanished into the hospital’s corridors.

By 8:00 am, CCTV footage of the attack had surfaced on social media. Within a few hours, police had identified all five shooters.

In the clip, Tauseef Badshah can be seen leading the group. A pistol is clearly visible in his right hand. As the others rush inside and fire, Tauseef walks in with a calm stride. When the job is done, he exits just as casually, unfazed.

Soon after the murder, two photographs started doing the rounds. In one, Tauseef is riding pillion on a motorcycle, raising a pistol in the air. In another, one of the shooters is seen with both arms raised in what looks like a celebratory gesture.

Officials told India Today that the killers had done their homework. They seemed to know exactly where Mishra was and how to get to him.

One key detail that surfaced is that Room 209’s lock wasn’t working, and it couldn’t be bolted from inside. That made the hit easier. The entire operation, as per officials, appeared to be pre-planned down to the last detail.

Who is Tauseef Badshah?

Tauseef Raja, also known as Badshah, hails from Phulwari Sharif, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Patna.

His father runs a hardware store, his mother is a teacher, and he studied at the well-known Saint Karen’s School in the city.

But despite this seemingly ordinary upbringing, Tauseef had already been named in at least one case under the Arms Act. Police say he recently started getting involved in contract killings—either executing the murders himself or helping arrange logistics for them.

Investigators also believe Tauseef was involved in a firing incident near the Durga temple in Phulwari Sharif during the month of Ramadan.

As for the motive behind Chandan Mishra’s murder, police say it’s rooted in an old rivalry.

Chandan and another gangster named Sheru were once close associates. But their equation soured while they were lodged together in Bhagalpur jail. Chandan eventually split from the group but continued using the “Sheru Gang” name. That decision, police say, may have ultimately cost him his life.

Within 12 hours of the murder, Bihar Police say they have arrested Tauseef in Phulwari Sharif, and detained other suspects from Buxar, with raids ongoing at hideouts linked to Sheru’s gang.

Political firestorm in Bihar

The shocking murder of a jailed gangster inside the high-end hospital in Patna has snowballed into a major political controversy in Bihar.

RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav took to X to criticise the state’s law and order situation.

“Criminals, protected by the government, shot at a patient admitted to a Patna hospital. Is anyone safe in Bihar? Did such an incident happen in Bihar before 2005, during the RJD’s rule?” he asked.

Independent MP Pappu Yadav also waded into the controversy, claiming he received threats warning him to stay away from the case. “Law and order have completely collapsed… Criminals are being killed on the basis of their castes,” he alleged.

The political fallout comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Bihar ahead of the state elections. During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated four Amrit Bharat trains and laid the foundation stones for several development projects.
