Tennis player Radhika Yadav has been shot dead by her father.
Yadav was a tennis player from Haryana’s Gurugram.
Her father was said to be upset with her over an addiction to social media.
But who was Yadav? What do we know about the incident?
Let’s take a closer look:
What do we know?
Yadav was 25-years-old.
She was a state-level tennis player.
She lived in Gurugram’s Sushant Lok-phase 2.
She was born on March 23, 2000.
She had broken into the top 200 rankings as a doubles tennis player in the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
She was ranked 113 in the doubles tennis player category.
As per the All India Tennis Association (AITA), her career-best rankings were 75 in Under-18 Girls, 53 in Women’s Doubles and 35 in Women’s Singles.
She had played in several national and international tournaments.
She had match-ups against Viswanadh Harshini, Bougrat Maelys, Sun Yifan, Maruri Suhitha, and Mashabayeva Dilnaz.
What happened?
The incident occurred around 10.30 am on the first floor of their family home.
Yadav and her father reportedly had an altercation over a video reel she shot for social media.
Yadav’s father was said to be upset about her addiction to Instagram’s reels.
Following the argument, Yadav’s father removed his revolver and fired five shots at her.
Yadav was struck by three bullets.
She was rushed to a private hospital by her family in critical condition.
However, she died of her injuries while being treated.
The police has arrested Yadav’s father and seized the gun.
The matter is under investigation.
Yadav’s father is said to have a license for the gun.
Gurugram Police public relations officer Sandeep Kumar said, “The father became agitated and shot her. The weapon used was a licensed revolver and has been recovered from the house”.
Rajender Kumar, Station House Officer of Sector 56 Police Station, said, “We received a call from the hospital regarding a woman admitted with gunshot wounds. By the time we arrived, she had passed away. Statements from family members confirmed that the father was responsible”.
Man strangles wife
In a separate incident in Gurugram, a 30-year-old man allegedly strangled his wife after she slapped him during a domestic row in the Rajendra Park area.
After killing her, the husband surrendered at the local police station.
Police said Ketan, a resident of B-block of Rajendra Park colony, works at Jewar Airport in the cargo department. His wife was identified as 27-year-old Jyoti.
Ketan had married Jyoti Ketan six years ago after courtship. They have two children.
On Sunday, around 6 pm, Ketan surrendered at Anand Garden police chowki, saying he had killed his wife.
Police took Jyoti’s body into custody from the couple’s home.
As of now, one from Jyoti’s family has filed a complaint against Ketan, police said.
An investigating officer said that during interrogation, Ketan claimed that Jyoti was beating their daughter over some issue and when he objected, she slapped him.
In a fit of anger, Ketan punched her and then strangled her with his pyjamas, the officer said.
Jyoti’s maternal home is in southwest Delhi’s Bindapur. She had distanced herself from her family after marriage.
Ketan’s father Vinod Kumar Pathak runs a clinic outside the house, police said.
“We are waiting for the family of the deceased woman. No complaint has been received yet and we will register a case soon,” said Rajendra Park Police Station SHO Rajesh Kumar.
