The arrest of Monojit Mishra has lifted the lid on his years of abuse and control.

Police stations across Kolkata, including Kasba, Anandapur, Gariahat and Kalighat, have filed FIRs against him. The charges include molestation, assault, issuing death threats and outraging the modesty of women.

In another case, Monojit reportedly attacked a security guard who has also been arrested in the gangrape case at South Calcutta Law College.

He is also accused of threatening to shoot teachers who questioned his behaviour and irregular attendance.

In this explainer, we take a look at the cases that have come to light following Monojit Mishra’s arrest.

Here’s a look:

Monojit Mishra’s rein of terror

Mishra is the main accused in the gangrape of a 24-year-old law student that took place on June 25 at South Calcutta Law College.

He is a former student of the same college and had returned as a contractual staff member.

Two current students, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Zaib Ahmed, have also been arrested. They allegedly recorded the assault to blackmail the survivor later. A college guard, who is accused of helping carry out the crime after college hours, has also been arrested.

Mishra’s past is now under the spotlight, revealing a long list of serious allegations going back more than ten years.

In 2013, he was accused of stabbing a man and attacking a colleague before disappearing until 2016.

Titas Manna, a former classmate and one-time friend, told India Today that he and Monojit became close in 2012 through their involvement with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at South Calcutta Law College.

He told the media outlet, “An attempt to murder case was lodged against Monojit in 2013 after he allegedly stabbed a catering worker and cut off their finger.”

He also told NDTV that Monojit Mishra, known as ‘Mango’ on campus, was a “rowdy” figure who frightened students. “He was ferocious. He can kill anyone on the road. It wouldn’t matter to him.”

After resurfacing in 2016, reports suggest that his behaviour did not change.

In 2017, an FIR was filed against him for assault and issuing threats.

That same year, when he tried to return to student politics, TMCP leaders reportedly refused to take him back because of his criminal background.

In July 2019, a female student filed a complaint at Gariahat Police Station, accusing him of tearing off her clothes at the college.

On December 31, 2019, after attending a friend’s party, Mishra was accused of stealing a music system and other valuables. A complaint was filed at Haridevpur Police Station.

In 2022, a woman from Kolkata’s Swinhoe Street lodged a molestation complaint against him at Kasba Police Station.

In 2024, he was accused of attacking a college guard and damaging college property, according to a police complaint.

In 2025, another complaint alleged that he had assaulted a police officer.

Even after leaving college, Monojit remained active in student politics. He was seen as a go-between for students and local political leaders.

In 2022, a TMCP member wrote an anonymous letter to the Vice Principal of the law college, warning about Monojit’s criminal background and urging action for the safety of others. The letter was ignored.

A member of the college’s governing body told The Telegraph that teachers who raised concerns about his attendance or corruption were met with violent threats, leaving them too afraid to approach the police.

Who is Monojit Mishra?

Mishra graduated from South Calcutta Law College in 2022. He later began practising law at Alipore Law College.

He held the position of Organising Secretary in the South Kolkata district unit of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).

After the incident, the college has terminated Mishra’s services and expelled the two other co-accused.

On Wednesday, the Bar Council of West Bengal cancelled Monojit Mishra’s membership and removed his name from its records.

The case has caused a political controversy in West Bengal, with the opposition BJP holding the ruling Trinamool Congress responsible due to Mishra’s links with TMCP. Meanwhile, the Trinamool has denied any connection and said that legal action will follow its course.

The gangrape happened inside the South Calcutta Law College campus in Kasba on June 25, between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm. A complaint was lodged the next night, after which the Kasba police made the arrests.

Police said the 24-year-old woman had come to the college around noon on Wednesday to complete some exam-related work.

In her complaint, she said that she initially waited inside the college union room. Later, the main accused allegedly instructed that the campus gate be locked. The woman was then raped inside the security guard’s room on the premises.
