The gang-rape of a first-year law student has stunned West Bengal. A 24-year-old woman at a law college in south Kolkata was allegedly raped by a practising criminal lawyer inside the insititution as two other men – current students of the college – stood guard.
The survivor has alleged she was tortured for hours, threatened and beaten. The horrific case has evoked the memories of last year’s rape and murder of a trainee doctor inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Here’s why.
Law student ‘raped, filmed’ in Kolkata
The first-year law student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba area by an alumnus of the institute and two senior students on June 25.
According to the initial investigation, the survivor reached the college around noon to fill out exam forms when the accused told her to stay back.
In a complaint lodged at the Kasba Police Station on Thursday evening, the student said the three men assaulted her after she rejected the marriage proposal of the main accused, as she is in a relationship.
The survivor alleged she was cornered by the three accused at 7.30 pm and dragged inside the security guard’s room next to the students’ union office. According to the woman’s complaint, the suspects shut the main door of the college and forced the security guard to sit outside his room.
She said that the main accused raped her, while the other two stood guard. “I fought back… I cried and asked him to let me go… I even touched his feet but he didn’t let me go…”.

The police have arrested three men: Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student of the law college; 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20, both third-semester students at the college.
The main accused, Mishra, allegedly raped her while the other two men stood outside the room.
As per the woman’s complaint, she had a panic attack and begged for an inhaler. After one of the accused brought her the inhaler, she said she “took it and felt better”, reported NDTV.
The student told the police that when she tried to escape, the men caught her and the assault continued.
She said the main gate of the college had been locked “and the guard was helpless and did not help”.
The woman said she was thrown into the guard’s room, where Mishra allegedly raped her. “When I fought he blackmailed me…". The woman has alleged she was filmed during the sexual assault.
“She alleged that the accused threatened to release the footage on internet if she talked. They also threatened to harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases,” a police source told PTI.
The woman said the men released her at 10.50 pm and warned her not to inform the authorities.
‘Bite marks, hit with hockey’
The medical examination of the survivor has confirmed that she was gang-raped, a senior official of the Kolkata Police said on Friday (June 27).
“The evidence corroborated what the victim alleged in her complaint lodged with the Kasba Police Station. There is evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks and nail scratches on her body,” the officer told PTI.
There were also assault marks on and around her neck.
The woman has alleged that she was hit on the head with a hockey stick during the sexual assault.
“According to a Supreme Court judgement, all persons in a group involved in cases of gang rape must be held liable, even if all of them did not commit the act of rape. In this case, two other persons helped in the rape. So this is a case of gang rape, and they are also accused in the case,” Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told PTI.
The gang-rape case has stirred a political storm in West Bengal. The opposition, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Left and the Congress, has targeted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the main accused’s links to the ruling party.
As per reports, Monojit Misra is a member of TMC’s student wing and a former president of its college unit. He wielded immense influence on the campus even after graduating four years ago.
Mishra is a practising criminal lawyer at Alipore Police and Sessions Court and was employed as a temporary non-teaching staff at his former college.
The other two accused – Ahmed and Mukherjee – are also members of the law college’s Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit, reported Indian Express.
The TMC has distanced itself from Mishra. TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya claimed that Mishra was never the organisation’s president, adding that the students’ body at the law college has been defunct for years. He also demanded the strictest punishment for the accused if found guilty.

The BJP is trying to turn up the heat on the TMC over the main accused’s links to the party. The saffron party and the Congress have announced protests on Saturday (June 28).
OUTRAGEOUS! Manojit Mishra, one of the prime accused in the brutal gang-rape of a college student in Kasba has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC:

Parallels with RG Kar rape-murder case
The political furore and the brutality of the gang-rape of the law student in Kolkata have drawn parallels with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last August.
A 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the government-run hospital in Kolkata last year. The autopsy report had revealed cut marks on her hands and face and injuries on other parts of her body. She was also severely hit, which broke off pieces of glass from her spectacles that got into her eyes.
Sanjay Roy, the prime culprit who has been sentenced to a life term, had reportedly banged the deceased’s head against the wall, leading to head injuries. The autopsy report also found that the victim was bleeding from her private parts.
The then principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, had reportedly tried to brush off the case as a suicide. Ghosh, who is currently in jail, was believed to be close to the TMC.
The brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor had triggered widespread protests across the country, raising questions about women’s safety.
The Congress had accused the TMC of “attempting” to save the accused. The BJP demanded West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation over the violence at RG Kar hospital.
The incident sparked a political blame game, with the TMC accusing the opposition of trying to foment trouble in the state.
With the West Bengal Assembly elections next year, the opposition is expected to again up the ante against the TMC government over the gang-rape of the law student.
