Communal clashes broke out in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow late Sunday night during celebrations of India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy.
As the situation escalated with reports of arson and stone-pelting between two groups, police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas.
The investigation continues in the clashes, and the police have arrested 13 people so far.

Mhow clashes after India wins ICC trophy
On Sunday, clashes erupted in Mhow town after stones were allegedly pelted at a rally celebrating India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory , PTI reported, citing locals.
Mhow is situated around 25 kilometres from the Indore district headquarters.
The victory rally was reportedly organised by a group of young cricket enthusiasts to mark India’s historic win against New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy match in Dubai.

As they approached the Jama Masjid area, a large group of people allegedly began hurling stones at them, prompting them to abandon their bikes and flee the spot, locals were cited as saying.
During this time, some people had an altercation that escalated into violence.
According to The Times of India, the violence that started in the Jama Masjid area soon spread to Manek Chowk, Sewa Marg, Market Chowk and Rajesh Mohalia.
In the aftermath, some people set ablaze several motorcycles, further escalating the tensions in the area, they added.
Indore collector Ashish Singh said, “Two vehicles were set on fire. We are not sure how many people were injured but the clash was contained immediately through heavy deployment of forces from. Additional forces have been called in.”
Sources said a shop was also torched, but police hadn’t given out official figures at the time this report was filed. Shopkeeper Sandeep Dayma told TOI about a dozen two-wheelers were set on fire.
Locals said that the clash led to panic in several areas of the town.
Situation under control
Collector Singh said that the situation was under control and that forces had been deployed in the area.
He also added that how the clash came out to be will be ascertained later.
Police sources said Superintendent of Police (Indore Rural) Hitika Wasal reached Mhow to assess the circumstances and take necessary actions to restore law and order.
SP Vasal said, “The situation is completely under control now. I would like to tell everyone that I do not believe in any type of fake news… Adequate force is here; we are patrolling the area. The incident will be investigated, and all the necessary action will be taken in this regard; accordingly, the people involved will be punished. Now there is news of three people getting injured here. Further investigation is underway"
Notably, as Mhow is an army cantonment, army personnel are always stationed there, as per India Today.
Further, DIG Agarwal also said that forces reached the spot after receiving information about the clashes and brought the situation under control.
“A police force has been stationed there. There is no information of any casualties,” he added.
An investigation into the incident is underway, with authorities working to ascertain the cause of the clashes.
According to sources, the police have arrested 13 people, and efforts to identify more rioters based on video footage are ongoing.
The authorities are identifying those who wore masks and threw stones and petrol bombs.
India’s historic win
The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy came to a fitting conclusion on Sunday with India handing New Zealand a four-wicket loss in Dubai to become the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

New Zealand posted a competitive total on the board after Team India lost yet another ODI toss, finishing on 251/7 thanks to half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out). Indian skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front in reply with a brilliant 76 off 83 balls while Shreyas Iyer (48) and KL Rahul (34 not out) made vital contributions as the Men in Blue recovered from a wobble to chase the target down with an over to spare.
Soon after the victory, cricket fans erupted into celebrations on streets. They were seen waving the tricolour and dancing happily.
