People are tired of guessing, second-guessing, and popping the big question: “What are we?” Even at the best of times, such a query can turn your relationship into a minefield. According to Tinder’s annual Year In Swipe report, people are looking to be more open, honest and in touch with their emotional needs than ever. Which is why ‘Clear Coding’ will likely emerge on the forefront of dating trends in 2026. But what is it?

Many people, particularly Gen Z, are fed up with the dating scene. A cursory look online and on dating apps shows that 2025 was dominated by mixed signals, situationships and frustrations.

People are tired of guessing, second-guessing, and popping the big question: “What are we?” Even at the best of times, such a query can turn your relationship into a minefield.

According to Tinder’s annual Year In Swipe report, people in 2026 are looking to be more open, honest and in touch with their emotional needs than ever. So, expect no more mixed signals. This is why many think that ‘Clear Coding’ will likely emerge on the forefront of dating trends.

But what is ‘Clear Coding’? How could it change dating trends?

Let’s take a closer look.

What is it?

Clear coding is when you state your emotions and lay out certain expectations from a relationship. It is all about expressing your intentions, expectations and emotions openly to the other person so that they are not left second-guessing. Some liken it to writing a clean and readable code, albeit in a relationship.

Whether it is defining the relationship early, expressing boundaries or simply communicating your feelings, clear coding is about making dating simpler, safer, and emotionally stress-free.

Why it is becoming popular

Gen Z is going for ‘Clear Coding’ in order to prioritise clarity and emotional safety over chaos. They are done with mixed signals, second-guessing, overthinking and toxic patterns, and now want to move towards clearer relationship goals.

In recent times, apps have developed features that help to clarify what people are looking for. Representational image/Pixabay

The latest data suggests that many are choosing to move away from the “guessing games” of modern dating. Sixty-four per cent of daters believe it is time to prioritise emotional integrity, while 60 per cent are making the active decision to seek out clearer communication regarding where a relationship is headed.

How it can help

Clear coding helps people take control of their dating life by making the choice to be transparent from the very first interaction. When they choose to lead with emotional maturity, they decide to build a foundation of trust that saves them from heartache down the road.

It also allows people to set clear expectations and maintain respect even if things do not work out.

Goodbye situationships?

Gen Z is seemingly over situationships as well. The messy and relationship that so defined 2025 has pushed people towards clarity and labels. After years of ghosting, breadcrumbing and confusing signals, clear coding feels refreshing and more respectful.

In recent times, apps have developed features that help to clarify what people are looking for. With a range of options ranging from “long-term”, “open to dating, but not casual” to “slow-paced” and “casual”, apps are helping daters decide what they are looking for.

What other dating trends are likely in 2026?

Another trend likely to influence dating in 2026 will be Friendfluence. In this, friends will play a major role in your dating life and decisions. Friends are likely to choose who you date and plan double dates, and if your match does not pass the bestie test, you know it is time to say bye-bye.

Emotional vibe coding will also be a trend this year, with people prioritising emotional availability, honest conversations and balanced chemistry over drama. Another trend to look out for is ‘hot-take’ dating. In this, values, beliefs and opinions are given just as much priority as physical attraction.
