It is set to be a busy Tuesday with several events lined up for the day.

Firstly, the elections to pick the next Vice President, following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, will take place today. Meanwhile, Apple Inc. is likely to launch its iPhone 17 series along with a range of other accessories.

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will begin today and conclude on September 29. The Asia Cup tournament is set to begin with the first match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. In India, PM Modi will be visiting Punjab to take stock of the flood situation.

Vice Presidential elections

The Vice Presidential elections are set to take place today. The voting will begin at 10 am and conclude at 5 pm.

This election has become necessary to fill the vacant seat following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on the inaugural day of the Parliament’s Monsoon session this year.

The election will take place between the ruling NDA nominee, CP Radhakrishnan and the INDIA bloc’s nominee, who is also a former Supreme Court judge, B Sudershan Reddy . While Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu, Reddy is from Telangana.

Apple Inc. to launch its iPhone 17 series

Apple will host its ‘Awe-dropping’ event today (September 9), where its highly anticipated iPhone 17 series could be unveiled alongside new versions of the Apple Watch, updated AirPods, and a range of accessories. Four variants of the iPhone series, namely, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air and the basic iPhone 17 option.

According to reports, after five years, Apple appears ready to launch a redesigned iPhone. Inspired by the brand’s highly successful MacBook Air and iPad Air, the new ‘iPhone Air’ is speculated to signal a completely fresh artistic direction.

UN General Assembly to take place

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) will open today and conclude on September 29, 2025. The high-level General Debate will run from September 23 to September 27. Under the presidency of Annalena Baerbock of Germany, the session’s theme is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights”.

Key events during the high-level week include a commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary and meetings on global issues such as climate action, noncommunicable diseases, and women’s rights. World leaders will use the General Debate to address pressing global challenges.

The annual gathering serves as a critical forum for diplomacy and multilateral discussions among all 193 member states.

Asia Cup tournament to begin

The Asia Cup tournament is set to begin with the first match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi today.

Group A will consist of India, Pakistan, Oman and UAE while Group B will consist of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.

Following the initial group stage, the top two teams from each group will enter the Super Four phase, where all teams will face each other in a round-robin format. The top two teams at the end of the Super Four will qualify for the final.

PM Modi to visit Punjab & Himachal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab and Himachal Pradesh today to take stock of the flood situation there. Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora appealed to PM Modi to announce a relief package of at least Rs 20,000 crore for the flood-ravaged State during his visit.

In Himachal, PM Modi will arrive in Kangra at around 1:30 PM to meet the flood affected persons and NDRF, SDRF and Aapda Mitra teams. In Punjab, he will conduct an aerial survey of the flood affected areas in Punjab around 3pm. He will arrive at Gurdaspiur around 4:15 PM and hold discussions with senior officials and chair a review meeting on the ground situation. He will also interact with flood affected persons as well as NDRF, SDRF and Aapda Mitra Team in Gurdaspur.

Punjab is currently facing one of its worst flood disasters in decades. The floods are a result of swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers along with seasonal rivulets caused by heavy rainfall in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, heavy rains in recent days in Punjab have also intensified the flooding situation, aggravating the challenges faced by residents.
