US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports come into effect
US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports will officially come into effect today, marking a significant shift in trade policy.
The tariffs , originally introduced as part of a broader effort to protect domestic industries, impose a 25 per cent duty on steel imports and a 10 per cent duty on aluminium imports. The announcement was made by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday (March 9).
The decision has sparked mixed reactions globally with critics warning of potential economic fallout. Economists also warn that increased costs for raw materials could hurt industries reliant on steel and aluminium, such as automotive, construction, and manufacturing.

Trump to hold bilateral talks with Irish PM Martin
US President Donald Trump is set to host Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin for bilateral talks at the White House as part of the Irish Government’s traditional St Patrick’s programme of overseas engagements.
The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening US-Ireland relations, economic cooperation and key geopolitical issues, including Ireland’s role within the European Union.
This meeting comes on the backdrop of increasing apprehension that the president’s protectionist trade and tax policies could severely jeopardise the Irish economy, which is substantially supported by enduring investments from US multinational corporations.
