Trump meets Takaichi

US President Donald Trump is meeting Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo. This is a key event in Trump’s three-day visit to the country, marking his first trip to the country since returning to the White House in January.

The discussions are expected to focus heavily on national security and trade issues, crucial topics for the US-Japan alliance. Analysts anticipate Takaichi will pledge to increase Japan’s defence spending, a priority for both leaders. A recalibrated trade deal will also be on the agenda, with Japan hoping to protect its interests.

The meeting will be Takaichi’s first major diplomatic test since becoming Japan’s first female prime minister on October 21.

Cyclone Montha to make landfall near Andhra coast

Cyclone Montha, which has been brewing in the Bay of Bengal for the last few days, is expected to make landfall near the coast of Andhra Pradesh today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts across multiple districts in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm will likely cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, and gusts up to 110 kmph.

In preparation, authorities have closed schools and colleges in several high-risk districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Senior government officers have been appointed to oversee readiness and relief efforts in the affected districts. While Coastal residents are being evacuated, with over 900 fishing vessels shepherded to safety.

First hearing for Tetsuya Yamagami

The first hearing for Tetsuya Yamagami, accused of the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is scheduled to take place today. The 45-year-old faces charges of murder and violating firearm laws for the shooting that occurred while Abe was giving a campaign speech in Nara. The trial will be held at the Nara District Court.

Yamagami has reportedly admitted to the killing and is expected to plead guilty at the first hearing. The case’s central focus will likely shift to the motive and sentencing. The defence is expected to argue for leniency, highlighting Yamagami’s grievances against the Unification Church.
