German parliament debates new military service model

The German Parliament is scheduled to debate a new military service model today. This legislative discussion follows weeks of debate and a compromise reached by the ruling coalition in response to the need to strengthen the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) amid a changed security environment in Europe.

The core of the proposed model is a hybrid system that remains primarily voluntary but reintroduces a form of compulsory interaction with the military. It also includes all men above the age of 18 to fill out a questionnaire detailing their interests and fitness for service. The government aims to significantly boost the size of the armed forces to reach 260,000 soldiers by 2035 and create a large reserve force.
