Defence ministers from Nato’s 32 member countries will meet in Brussels today to discuss the defence spending targets; they will also meet with Ukrainian officials to assess the country’s defence efforts amid the ongoing war with Russia. In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming state elections in Patna and also interact with party workers

It is set to be a busy Wednesday with several events lined up for the day.

Firstly, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) defence ministers will meet in Brussels today. In India, PM Modi is set to launch the Bihar poll campaign and interact with the BJP workers there.

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen will be visiting Serbia and Kosovo today. Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, will be leading the Indian delegation for the  Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda. Pakistan will face England in the upcoming match of the ODI Women’s World Cup 2025.

Nato defence ministers meet

Defence ministers of member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (Nato) will be meeting in Brussels today. The meeting will be chaired by Nato Secretary General, Mark Rutte.

Ministers will likely review progress on the robust defence plans adopted at recent Nato Summits. This includes assessing the readiness and investment in new capability targets to ensure the Alliance can quickly and effectively respond to threats across all domains (land, sea, air, cyber, and space).

There will be a continued push to ensure all Allies meet or exceed the pledge to spend at least 2 per cent of their GDP on defence, reinforcing the principle of burden-sharing across the Alliance.

PM Modi to launch Bihar poll campaign, interact with BJP workers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch his campaign for the Bihar Assembly elections today. He will also hold an interactive session involving BJP workers.

Announcing the event on X, PM Modi said he would speak directly with party workers on October 15 as part of the party’s “Mera Booth, Sabse Majboot" (My Booth, the Strongest) outreach programme.

He also invited workers to share their feedback and suggestions ahead of the session. The participants have been shortlisted under the ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Majboot’ initiative.

The 243-member Bihar Assembly will vote in two phases on November 6 and November 11, while the results will be announced on November 14.

Ursula von der Leyen visits Serbia, Kosovo

EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen will be travelling to Serbia and Kosovo as part of her annual tour of the Western Balkans. This visit underscores the EU’s commitment to the region’s path toward accession.

A primary focus is the EU’s €6 billion Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. Von der Leyen will discuss the implementation of this plan, which aims to accelerate reforms, encourage gradual access to the EU’s Single Market, and ultimately, help double the regional GDP within the next decade. She will emphasise the need for continued commitment to economic and democratic reforms to unlock this funding.

In Belgrade, Von der Leyen is scheduled to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Đuro Macut. In Pristina, she will meet with President Vjosa Osmani and the acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The meetings will serve to review each country’s progress on its EU reform agenda, including the rule of law, media freedom.

MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh to visit Uganda

Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest & Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh, will be leading the Indian delegation for the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) being held in Uganda’s Kampala.

The theme of the Mid-Term Ministerial is “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”. According to the statement, the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) will be held in Kampala this year.

MEA noted in its statement that Uganda is the Chair of NAM for the period 2024-26. The Mid-Term Ministerial under the theme of “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”. India is a founding member of the movement which brings together 121 developing countries on a platform of historical significance. India remains committed to the principles and values of the movement.

ODI Women’s World Cup: England v Pakistan

Pakistan Women’s cricket team will face England for the One Day International World Cup today. This will be both England and Pakistan’s fourth match of the tournament.

The match will be played in R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo as Pakistan has been playing all there matches outside of India due to political reasons. The match will begin at 3 pm IST. Pakistan has previously lost the matches against Bangladesh, India and Australia.
