Here’s all that is set to take place throughout the day.

New CJI to take charge

Justice Surya Kant is confirmed to take over as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) from today. He will be succeeding CJI BR Gavai. He was officially appointed by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, following the recommendation of the outgoing CJI. His elevation marks a significant moment, as he becomes the first person from Haryana to hold the country’s highest judicial office.

He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 and later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Some of his landmark judgments include the abrogation of Article 370 concerning Jammu and Kashmir, the electoral bonds scheme, and the “one-rank-one-pension” scheme.

INS Mahe to be inducted

The Indian Navy will commission the first vessel in a new class of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, ‘Mahe’, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This latest development marks a critical milestone, clearly demonstrating India’s growing technological skill. It shows the world the true prowess of India’s indigenous shipbuilding and naval combat capabilities, perfectly aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.

Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, Mahe is the lead vessel of eight ships scheduled in the new class of ASW-SWCs. The vessel has more than 80 per cent indigenous content and bears testimony to India’s maturing shipbuilding ecosystem. It integrates indigenous sensors and weapons with command-control systems reflecting India’s integrated defence manufacturing capabilities.

Belgian unions call for a three-day strike

Belgian trade unions (CSC/ACV, FGTB/ABVV, and CGSLB) have called for a coordinated three-day national strike beginning today. The strike is expected to cause major disruptions across various sectors. On the first day, railway and public transport workers are expected to go on strike.

The unions are protesting government plans for pension cuts, tax increases, limits on wage indexation, and the “social dismantling” of public services. The action follows a large demonstration in October that brought over 120,000 people to the streets of Brussels, with unions noting they received no response to their letter to Prime Minister Bart De Wever.

RSS to commemorate Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom day

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is set to commemorate Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom day with year-long events beginning from today. It will be holding various programmes across the country to honour the ninth Sikh Guru, whom they refer to as “Hind ki Chadar” (Shield of India) for his sacrifice in defending religious freedom.

RSS functionaries (Swayamsevaks) will participate in events over the course of the year to highlight the spirit of selflessness, sacrifice, and social harmony that Guru Tegh Bahadur embodied. November 24 will remain a public holiday for government offices, schools, and banks.
A grand three-day commemoration is being held at the historic Red Fort from November 23 to 25, the site where the Guru was martyred in Chandni Chowk.
