As 2024 comes to a close, the world once again turns to the ‘Prophet of the Doom’ Nostradamus for his predictions —rather a heads up on what the next year might hold.
The 16th-century seer, often credited with predicting events like the Great Fire of London, Hitler’s ascent to power, the 9/11 attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and even Japan’s devastating New Year’s Day earthquake last year, remains a compelling figure in modern times.
Best known for his book Les Propheties (The Prophecies), first published in 1555, Nostradamus penned 942 cryptic poetic quatrains, that are widely interpreted to foretell global events, many of which carry a sombre tone.
His apocalyptic worldview is often attributed to his immersion in the Old Testament and personal tragedy, having lost his wife and young children to an illness, likely the plague. Stricken by grief and helplessness, he turned to writing, offering humanity his poetic revelations of doom as a form of warning.
With the approach of 2025, here’s a look at some of Nostradamus’s most talked-about predictions.
An end of the Russia-Ukraine war
Nostradamus initially predicted in 2024 that the continent-wide conflict would persist. However, his enigmatic verses suggest that 2025 might bring a resolution to one of the longest-running wars of recent times.
The astrologer indicated that due to financial ruins and exhaustion from the war, which many assume refers to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that started in 2022, both sides may call it quits.
“Through long war all the army exhausted, so that they do not find money for the soldiers; instead of gold or silver, they will come to coin leather, Gallic brass, and the crescent sign of the Moon,” he wrote.
The references to ‘Gallic brass’ and the ‘crescent sign of the Moon’ hint at potential involvement from France and Turkey . Both nations have been supporters of Ukraine and may play crucial roles in mediating peace talks or orchestrating victory.

Plague and more war
Nostradamus predicts a dark future for England, foreseeing “cruel wars” and an “ancient plague” that will prove “worse than enemies.”
According to the New York Post, these “cruel wars” may not be external conflicts but might be referring to internal strife, particularly the infighting within the royal family. As many would argue, family dynamics can often be more damaging and destructive than any foreign threat.

Whereas, the “ancient plague” could indicate the return of a deadly mysterious disease. Given Nostradamus’ accurate prediction of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts have put a pin on this prophecy.
An asteroid collision
Nostradamus has also predicted that in 2025, a gigantic asteroid, ominously dubbed the “Harbinger of Fate,” will come dangerously close to colliding with Earth.
“From the cosmos, a fireball will rise, A harbinger of fate, the world pleads. Science and fate in a cosmic dance, The fate of the Earth, a second chance,” he wrote.
While the prediction paints a dramatic wipeout of life from Earth, it’s worth noting that close encounters with asteroids are not uncommon. Hundreds of asteroids pass by Earth each year, most of them at a safe distance (Hope this “harbinger” does too).
Natural disasters in Brazil
In an eerie piece of prose, Nostradamus predicts doom for Brazil in 2025. Referring to the South American country as the “garden of the world”, he predicts flooding and potential volcanic activity, linked to climate change.
“Garden of the world near the new city, In the path of the hollow mountains: It will be seized and plunged into the Tub, Forced to drink waters poisoned by sulfur,” reads his prediction.
The Tub might be a reference to flooding while sipping sulfur suggests a potential volcanic activity.

Has his predictions for 2024 come true?
Well, partly.
Nostradamus predicted, “The dry Earth will become more parched and there will be great floods.” Some believe this refers to the devastating 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck the US West Coast, causing significant destruction and triggering tsunamis.
His 2024 predictions also mentioned the abdication of King Charles, a war with China, a new pope, and the world moving closer to a climate apocalypse.
While both the Pope and King Charles are still firmly in place—though Charles recently stopped funding his brother Andrew—the prophecy of their downfall remains unfulfilled.
As for war with China, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin recently assured that it was “neither imminent nor unavoidable,” leaving this prediction somewhat open-ended. The same applies to climate change, which is certainly progressing, albeit slowly, as the planet continues to grapple with environmental crises.
So, fingers crossed for 2025!
