How can one forget the time when Mumtaz swirled in the tangy orange saree in the 1968 film Brahmachari for the popular song ‘Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche’, romancing the leading actor Shammi Kapoor? It was right after that time when the two got together. However, their romance was only short-lived. Reportedly, their relationship started taking a turning point due to Mumtaz’s career, only to end on a bitter note.
In case, Mumtaz hadn’t rejected Shammi Kapoor’s marriage proposal, she would have become the daughter-in-law of the Kapoor family. However, many wonder exactly what went wrong between the two. In an interview a few years back, the veteran actress spoke about her love affair with the Junglee actor and shared that she was very young and that getting married would affect her career.
‘Women in the Kapoor clan can’t work’
Speaking about the marriage proposal from Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz, while stating that the late actor used to take care of her and also loved her a lot further, revealed, “I loved him deeply but he told me that I couldn’t work after marriage as women marrying into the Kapoor clan didn’t work.”
The actress also revealed that she was only 17 at the time she received the marriage proposal, while Kapoor was double her age. “I told him I couldn’t marry him because I wanted to work and fulfill my dreams. I didn’t want to be a homemaker, taking care of his children and managing the household,” she added.
Mumtaz also opened up on Shammi Kapoor’s reaction after facing rejection and said that he was very angry with her. “He was angry and told me, ‘If you would have truly loved me, you would’ve accepted my proposal and left working in films. You only pretend to love me because you wanted to score big films opposite me.’ This left me completely heartbroken,” Mumtaz recalled being told at that time.
Eventually, Mumtaz got married to businessman Mayur Madhvani and has two daughters Natasha (wife of Fardeen Khan) and Tanya. On the other hand, Shammi Kapoor four years after his first wife’s death, got married to Neila Devi.
