No legal counsel for the accused?
Amid the investigation that continues to get murkier, The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has issued a statement that reads- “The death under mysterious circumstances has given rise to suspicion, mystery and a sense of conspiracy. Multiple FIRs have been lodged with the police in different parts of the State. Allowing their conscience to defend the accused will be a historical mistake for the legal fraternity."
The statement is clear that no lawyer will be representing the accused in the singer’s case and people on social media have shared their reactions.
Netizens react
Here are some reactions that have dropped in:
But won’t this delay the case proceedings? According to Article 21 of the Constitution, i.e., the Right to a Fair Trial, Mahanta must have a lawyer to represent him, and only then can the case proceed further.
The Bar Council of India’s rules and established legal principles mandates an advocate to uphold a client’s interests fearlessly and defend a person accused of a crime regardless of their personal opinion about guilt….when there’s no representation how could zubeenda even get justice???
Let the people of Assam represent Zubeen da once the culprits are presented in the court against the individuals , we need public hearing on this!
In that case court will not be able to pass any judgement and this will lead to further delay in the case. PROBABLY
But if this happens then how can the trail begin, without defence court will not allow the trail then how mahanta will be punished legally
Zubeen Garg: More than just a singer
Ask his fans and admirers that the late singer was a philanthropist, messiah who became God for the state of Assam. During the second wave of the pandemic back in 2021, Zubeen Garg and his wife, offered the state government to convert a two-storey building into a Covid-care faculty. This was in Guwhati and the building could accommodate as 30 patients.
