MTV, which has been an part integral part of millenials and music lovers, will shut down five of its music channels in the UK by the end of 2025. The broadcasting of MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV will be ceased after 31st December. The network’s main channel MTV HD will remain unaffected.
MTV VJ Simone Angel reacts
“I am really sad, and I’m a little bit in disbelief, and I know it’s been a long time coming. We need to support these artists and we all need to dance again and listen to music. And I know we do that online in our own little bubbles, but MTV was the place where everything came together. So it really does break my heart,” MTV VJ Simone Angel expressed her disappointment while talking to the BBC.
Is the shutdown part of a broader cost-cutting initiative by Paramount?
As per reports, the shutdown of the UK music channels is a part of a broader cost-cutting initiative by Paramount as it targets to reduce the spend of $500 million globally. Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil, too, will face similar closures.
The biggest reason behind this decision is the pattern of audience consumption of music in modern times. Today, no one waits for their song to stream on TV as they prefer YouTube, TikTok, and streaming apps to discover and enjoy their favourite songs. Because of this, the viewership of MTV has dipped drastically.
