Why Cheat India: Emraan Hashmi's social drama gets a new title following CBFC's objections

The title of Emraan Hashmi-fronted upcoming social drama Cheat India has now been changed to Why Cheat India. The move comes following objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Producer Tanuj Garg confirmed the news, stating that the CBFC was concerned with the earlier title. He told Mumbai Mirror, “Yes, the Board had concerns about the previous title. We had an extensive conversation regarding the proposed change since the theatrical trailer and TV promos had already been certified with the original title. We felt this would lead to dual communication with the audience but finally, in the interest of time, we mutually agreed on a title change."

The daily reports that after watching the film, the examining committee had said that the title could be misleading as per the context of the film. The revising committee too echoed similar thoughts, despite makers arguing that the title has been in the public domain for the past two years, and the trailer and promos have been circulating for a while now.

Why Cheat India, earlier scheduled to hit screens on 25 January, was pushed ahead by a week to avoid clashing with Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Thackeray . The film will now release on 18 January. Directed by Soumik Sen, the film also stars Shreya Dhanwantary.
