While speaking at the India Today Conclave, Karisma Kapoor, who had the company of Kareena Kapoor sometimes back, spoke about why the actresses in the Kapoor family quit the Hindi film industry after getting married. To this, she cleared the air and said it was nothing but out of choice, citing the examples of her own mother Babita and aunt Neetu Kapoor.

However, veteran actress Mumtaz once revealed the women in that family weren’t allowed to act after tying the knot. She was seeing Shammi Kapoor back in the day when they both were at the peak of their careers. However, their romance was only short-lived. Reportedly, their relationship started taking a turning point due to Mumtaz’s career, only to end on a bitter note.

In an interview a few years back, the veteran actress spoke about her love affair with the Junglee actor and shared that she was very young and that getting married would affect her career.

‘Women in the Kapoor clan can’t work’

Speaking about the marriage proposal from Shammi Kapoor, Mumtaz , while stating that the late actor used to take care of her and also loved her a lot further, revealed, “I loved him deeply but he told me that I couldn’t work after marriage as women marrying into the Kapoor clan didn’t work.”

The actress also revealed that she was only 17 at the time she received the marriage proposal, while Kapoor was double her age. “I told him I couldn’t marry him because I wanted to work and fulfill my dreams. I didn’t want to be a homemaker, taking care of his children and managing the household,” she added.

Coming back to Karisma Kapoor, almost a decade after getting married, she made her Bollywood comeback with Vikram Bhatt’s Dangerous Ishq in 2012, and was also seen in a show called Mentalhood and Brown. She’s now gearing up for Netflix’s Murder Mubarak. And Alia Bhatt, who got married to Ranbir Kapoor in 2022, is still very much active in films and a bonafide movie star.
