The undisputed queen of bold fashion choices: How Giorgia Andriani moved to India for its colourful fashion palette

Giorgia Andriani’s fashion choices have always sparked conversation. Whether she dons western outfits that will drop your jaws, or lehengas that she brings to life with her personality, the Indo-Italian diva has always enjoyed the perks of a steal-worthy closet, both on and off screen. In a heart-to-heart chat, Giorgia confesses that Indian fashion was a huge reason for her life-changing move to India.

Talking about how the fashion scene in Europe differs from what you encountered in India, she said, “Oh wow, they’re both so unique! In Europe, fashion often leans towards clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and neutral palettes – there’s a certain timeless elegance to it. India, on the other hand, is vibrant and rich in textures, patterns, and craftsmanship, each piece often carrying cultural significance and storytelling. Experiencing both has been eye-opening for me, and I love blending elements from each to create my own personal style.”

Giorgia added, “It’s definitely a mix. You’ll see traditional handloom saris and intricate embroidery existing right alongside bold, avant-garde designer looks. That fusion is what inspires me the most. I love wearing something with a strong cultural identity but giving it a modern twist, like pairing an embroidered blouse with high-waist trousers or styling traditional jewelry in unexpected ways. India taught me that fashion can be both rooted and rebellious at the same time.”

On being a trained Kathak dancer

Kathak has been such a game-changer for me. It taught me how to tell stories with my body and use these beautiful hand gestures and expressions, not to mention the costumes. Indian classical dance forms have the most beautiful costumes that one can don. They are vibrant, fun, eye-catching and totally mesmerising, when you combine them with Indian classical dance moves. When I’m doing contemporary stuff now, I pull from all that training. The footwork, the spins, the way you control every movement - it all adds this elegance to modern choreography. I love finding ways to sneak in some classical elements while keeping things current and fresh.

On her journey

You know what? It was deciding to stay in India permanently instead of going back to Europe. That was this huge leap of faith moment where I had to trust my gut completely. Everything after that - Guest iin London, Karoline Kamakshi, all the music videos - it all started with that one decision to stay. It taught me that sometimes the biggest career moves aren’t about getting specific roles, but about putting yourself in the right place where your passion meets opportunity. In India, I got opportunities to combine all of my passions - acting, dancing and fashion. My career choices have given me the due recognition, as a performer, as a dancer and even as a fashionista, as someone who is fearless and bold and this is exactly what I have wanted.

Working in multiple languages and navigating different cultural expectations on set

. It’s definitely a learning curve. I spend time understanding the cultural nuances of the story and characters before stepping on set. Language-wise, I work with coaches and sometimes write the phonetics of dialogues to get the delivery just right. But more than words, acting is about emotions, once you understand the emotional arc of your character, everything else flows. Culturally, I try to be observant and respectful of how different teams work because every film set has its own rhythm. When fashion comes into the picture, I make sure that my wardrobe reflects as many Indian fashion sensibilities as possible.
