Teja Sajja’s HanuMan Movie Review: High on devotion, action & humour

Cast: Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Vennela Kishore, Vinay Rai

Devotion, action, humour and romance, Teja Sajja’s HanuMan has it all. The story is about Hanumanthu (Teja) who is the main protagonist of the film is a small thief who lives with his sister, Anjamma (Varalaxmi) in the fictional village of Anjanadri. The visuals of the film are to die for. The scenery, the calmness and the music of nature will take you to another world much like the characters of the film.

A sudden incident in Hanumanthu’s life changes the entire course of the film. He gets the magical power to save the world. His magical power attracts the attention of Michael (Vijay) and his friend Siri (Vennela Kishore) who is his scientist and partner in crime. The buildup of the story is fast and is a delight for many who likes that kind of pace.

The fight against all evil is what Hanumanthu’s mission in life is and his power lies with the rising sun. The moment there is a sun down, he has no power to fight evil. The story is about this underdog Hanumanthu, who is looked down upon in his village. But it is his sister who loves him dearly.

Still from Teja Sajja’s HanuMan

A small time thief with a good heart, how does Hanumanthu become the God’s chosen son to save the village? It is a surprise to many in his village who are not willing to believe in his super heroic power. The story revolves around Hanumanthu (Teja) who lives a simple life with his sister Anjamma (Varalaxmi) in the fictional village of Anjanadri.

More than the performance of Teja Sajja as Hanumanthu, what really works for the film is the comic presence of Srinu, Satya and the money. The movie actually picks up pace in the second half when Hanumanthu gets its power. Otherwise HanuMan is a huge stretch. A film that can be finished well within one and half hours is stretched beyond limit.

Another emotional bit of the HanuMan film that will touch your heart is the relationship that he shares with his sister, Anjamma (Varalaxmi). What doesn’t work for the film is the love story of Hanumanthu and Meenakshi (Amritha). Once you see that bit of a film, it will remind you of the 90s low budget movies. Amritha Aiyer’s performance is bit of a put on as much as the character of the film. I wish the makers dealt with developing the character of Michael. Trying to know why Michael is doing what he is doing. But despite a lot of drawbacks in the story telling, the VFX work is brilliant which cannot be ignored. Being a family film, HanuMan will keep you entertained throughout.

Rating: 2 and half out of 5
