Taylor Swift's '1989 (Taylor’s Version)' tops Billboard 200 Chart; becomes 'biggest debut of the year'

In a remarkable achievement, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) has now gone down in history to make its debut at the top of the Billboard 200 this week. Giving the singer her best first-week tally ever, the album also became the biggest debut of her career. Having been dropped on 27 October, the album is the pop singer’s 13th one to hit number one on the Billboard chart.

With around 1.653 million equivalent album units, the release puts it ahead of her previous personal best which was ‘Midnights’ with 1.578 million units. With the latest Billboard rankings, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is performing quite better than the other Swift albums in its first week.

Taylor Swift claims the top six songs on the Billboard Global 200  

While Taylor Swift’s ‘Is It Over Now?’ (Taylor’s Version) soars in at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 songs chart, the pop singer also claims the top six songs on the survey, marking the first in the chart’s three-year-plus history.

The other six songs on the chart are from Taylor Swift’s latest rerecorded album, 1989 (Taylor’s Version).  

According to Billboard, this is officially the biggest first week for any album since 2015. Back then, Adele’s ‘25’ debuted with around 3.482 million album units. Besides, it also became the sixth-largest week for an album.  

With the latest numbers now, the album has now clearly broken the record that was previously set by the release of the original version in 2014.

First-week sales of 1989 (Taylor’s Version)

As per the latest number, the first-week sales of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) were quite large and accounted for 43.8 per cent of all albums sold in the US in the tracking week. While it precisely sold 1.261 million physical copies (CD, vinyl, and cassettes), it consisted of 46.9 per cent of all physical album sales.  

Notably, this came shortly after the pop singer had a fallout with her manager after he acquired Big Machine Records, taking control of her masters. It was then that she started rerecording her songs and named them after the original albums and adding the bit ‘Taylor’s Version’. These albums have been quite successful. Among other versions, Swift also rereleased Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).
