Siddharth Anand’s highly awaited film Pathaan captivated audiences in 2023, at a time when the Indian film industry was plagued by various factors including pandemic disruptions, back-to-back flops, and boycotts.
The film not only brought the audience back to theaters but also marked a blockbuster re-entry of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to the big screen. Pathaan emerged as one of the biggest films of the year, even knocking down Avatar: The Way of Water, which had held the top spot for several weeks.
As fans desperately demanded a Pathaan sequel, it seems like their dream has come true. Yash Raj Films’ Aditya Chopra is reportedly gearing up for the sequel, even locking the script for Pathaan 2. It will be the eighth film in YRF’s ambitiously-crafted SPY Universe.
Is Pathaan 2 in the pipeline?
According to a Pinkvilla report, it has been confirmed that Aditya Chopra has joined hands with SRK to give a spin to Pathaan into a franchise within the spy universe.
“This is the twist to the YRF Spy Universe timeline - Pathaan 2 will predate Tiger vs Pathaan and will set up the clash of two cinematic legends on the big screen. Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan is definitely a character that has resonated with the audiences, and there is a constant on-ground demand from the audience to see more of SRK in the spy avatar. Soon after the release in January 2023, Adi and SRK decided to spin Pathaan into a standalone franchise too within the Spy Universe and the former started ideating the sequel of this all-time blockbuster,” the outlet reported citing a close source.
The reports further also suggest that the film will reunite Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan and will take place before the timeline of Tiger vs Pathaan, thus setting the ground for the epic battle between SRK’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger.
The film is expected to go on the floors by December 2024. An official confirmation is yet to be provided by the makers.
