Scam 2003 Volume 2 review: Gagan Dev Riar as Abdul Karim Telgi continues to shine in Hansal Mehta’s show

Cast: Gagan Dev Riar, Bharat Jadhav, Mukesh Tiwari, Shaad Randhawa Language: Hindi Director: Tushar Hiranandani Cliffhangers and charismatic characters are here to stay on OTT. The contagious Scam 2003 is back with Volume 2, and we have already seen the 2.0 version of Abdul Karim Telgi. The thread that binds Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992 and Scam 2003 together is neither deceit nor subterfuge, it’s what else but risk. Both the characters sourced from real-life people chanced upon an opportunity that changed their (and others’) world overnight. Who were these people? Villains or heroes or just humans? Gagan Dev Riar returns as few years have passed by since his iconic and unforgettable scam. A line in the show says his scam cannot be counted but weighed; after all, it’s about a piece of paper and no ordinary one at that. The police are hot on his trial and politicians are afraid of this fierce personality. This is that rare show where the one who has been wronged is more fearful of the one who is doing all the wrongs. But the makers of the show don’t judge the grey shades of Telgi, they enjoy the colourful strokes they paint him with. He’s a cracker of a character whose classic one-liners are too infectious and contagious to ignore. The show is far from perfect though, especially if you’re aware of the veins of the previous series of the franchise. But it was good to see Mukesh Tiwari in a role that allows him to go beyond the world of Rohit Shetty. About Telgi and the man he is Telgi, played by Gagan Dev, is described differently by different people, from a snake to smart to a Khota Sikka. He possesses shades of Gurukant Desai from Mani Ratnam’s 2007’s Guru, there’s charm and cockiness in the way he talks business and introduces himself. For him, there’s no black or white in business, it’s all about profit. And Hiranandani, who directs the show, and Karan Vyas and Kiran Yadnyopavit, who are the writers, give this ordinary man extraordinarily massy lines. Sample this- Savings account mein confidence jama karke rakha hoon, cash bhi aa jaayega. Scam 1992 and _2003_ have one thing in common- Scams that were always spoken about enough and scams that made history. There’s one more common thing between 1992 and 2003- The ICC Cricket World Cup. Hope India lifts the trophy this time. Gagan has already lifted the show. Scam 2003 Volume 2 is streaming on Sony LIV
