Actor Vijay Varma, who is all set to appear in Sujoy Ghosh’s Jaane Jaan next, recently opened up about how the concept of heroes and villains has evolved in Bollywood films. In an interview with Pinkvilla, the thriller film’s team was questioned about various turning points that have shaped the film industry.
As part of the conversation, Vijay Varma expressed how top Bollywood actors didn’t want to play heroes and instead played varied characters. Sujoy Ghosh, on his part, explained that audiences are willing to accept real-life traits coming to forefront in movies through actors.
Vijay Varma on evolution of heroes in Bollywood
On being asked about the evolution of heroes and villains in Bollywood films, Vijay Varma told the entertainment news portal that some key figures have changed the course of cinema entirely. The Darlings star further explained that with time, those actors and directors became a turning point.
Taking examples from yesteryear personalities like Amitabh Bachchan , the Jaane Jaan star added that the Sholay actor’s angry young man phase served as one such turning point. Not just this, the actor also highlighted Shah Rukh Khan’s personality as a romantic hero. Giving further examples, he also talked about the precedent set by actors like Hrithik Roshan, Irrfan Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Kareena Kapoor.
The 37-year-old further added, “I saw a big shift where actors and heroes wanted to play characters because they were like hero nahi chal raha hai (hero is not working).”

As part of the interaction, Sujoy Ghosh said heroes have become more human. In reel-life as in real-life, he described how everyone has a good side, a bad side, a complicated side and a hidden side. The Lust Stories 2 director further added how audiences are willing to accept all those traits that are coming to forefront.
