Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix documentary created a lot of buzz ahead of its release on 30 August. However, it failed to bag a spot in the top 10 shows on the streaming giant. The documentary president of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, Sara Bernstein spoke about the much-hyped piece in one of her recent interviews and said that it is “almost in a different category”. Sara Bernstein reflects on different approaches In an answer to a question from Deadline at MIA Market, the president of Imagine Documentaries and former HBO producer stated, “Fees have raised in terms of what this access looks like and what it costs a producer like our company on shows where the subjects exert a certain amount of editorial control.” It is worth noting that the conversation around the approach began after the release of the hit document series last year which was co-produced by the ex-royal duo’s Archewell Productions which signed a multi-million dollar Netflix deal. “We live in a world today where celebrities, big personalities, and talent of a certain magnitude understand what their value is to the industry and to an audience,” Bernstein said. She further added, “I think that has driven the desire to be more participatory in the process and to either demand a seat at the table as a producing partner or second producer.” Bernstein says editorial control is necessary During a conversation with the news portal, BBC Docs boss Clare Sillery remarked that she would never have made a deal with Harry & Meghan due to their editorial control demands. However, Bernstein, on the contrary, said, “It is important to maintain some level of editorial control.” She added that it is necessary to understand what these projects are while adding that the documentary on Harry & Meghan gives a glimpse of their life and that they are opening up to the viewers. She said that it is more entertaining than informative. It was around five years ago when Sara Bernstein joined Howard and Grazer’s Imagine. Since then, she has worked on CNN’s The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, Judy Blume Forever, and Lucy and Desi about Lucille Ball.
