Payal Kapadia on All We Imagine As Light losing to Emilia Pérez at Golden Globes: 'We didn’t win anything but...'

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, nominated for two awards at the recently held Golden Globes 2025, failed to bag a trophy in any category. However, the filmmaker said the experience left her with cherished memories.

Payal posted a picture with the producers of All We Imagine As Light—Thomas Hakim, Julien Graff, and Ranabir Das—before heading to the event and wrote, “We didn’t win anything but had soo much fun (sic)."

Held in Los Angeles on Sunday, All We Imagine As Light was competing in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture and Best Director categories. However, the Payal Kapadia directorial lost out to France’s Emilia Perez and Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, respectively.

All We Imagine As Light features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon in prominent roles.

Talking exclusively to Firstpost, Payal Kapadia revealed the reason for the film to consume much time in its production and said, “I made this film trying to raise money, which was from government grants. As I wanted some freedom as to what I wanted to do in the film and not have any baggage of, like, the box office. So in order to do that, I had to find co producers from all over the world and in India also. And so that process takes time, in the middle. I made another film. So that was also in Cannes in 2021. It’s called A Night Of Knowing Nothing. After that film was done, I had the funding. So from 2022 onwards, I started working on this film. I shot in 2023, and it’s out by 2024. So, actually, it didn’t take that much time. It was more than raising the funding beforehand that took time."
