Legendary ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas breathed his last on Monday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. He passed away at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness. The singer’s final rites were held in Mumbai on Tuesday. Several celebrities including Sonu Nigam, Shaan, and Papon also arrived to pay their last respects to the singer at his funeral. The pictures and videos of these celebrities surfaced on the Internet.

Notably, the unfortunate demise of Pankaj Udhas has led to a wave of sadness in the music fraternity. In one of the videos being circulated on the Internet, Sonu Nigam appears distressed as he mourns the death of the legendary singer. He, then, hugs Shaan and Papon who also arrived at the funeral to bid the final farewell to the singer.

Another video shows popular music composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan marking his presence at the ghazal maestro’s funeral. His arrival was followed by Zakir Hussain who came to pay his last respects to the now departed singer with musician Taufiq Qureshi.

Ahead of the final journey of the ghazal singer, a grand tribute was given to him through a performance by a band. The singer’s body was covered in the Indian flag at the time he was taken out for his final journey and the hearse was adorned with white flowers.  

Earlier, on Monday, the family of the singer issued a statement in which it said, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhar on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness.”

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas commenced his musical career in 1980. He released a ghazal album named Aahat to start his journey. In Bollywood, the ghazal singer shot to prominence for crooning the iconic track Chitthi Aayee Hai, for Sanjay Dutt’s film Naam. Throughout his career, Pankaj released several albums and performed in numerous live concerts, leaving an indelible mark in the Indian music industry.
