Veteran and versatile actress Neena Gupta, who has grabbed headlines for her bold and progressive thoughts, shared how movies shaped the idea of sex and sexual desire in India. She spoke about how slowly Indian society is progressing, and she was quick to understand that a woman shouldn’t be bound by the complicated and lengthy beliefs, which are imposed on her.
“What did they show in our movies? If you are a woman, your basic motto was to find a man. In fact, for the longest time, I thought we could get pregnant if we kissed. I literally thought it was true. That was what our movies showed us,” said Neena in an interview with Lilly Singh.
The _Badhaai Ho_ star also spoke about what takeaways the men had from Indian movies and said, “They learned that they are the boss. Even till today, this is the major takeaway from most films.”
“With women earning, there are more divorces because they are not willing to take sh*t from the men. Earlier, they weren’t earning, and they weren’t educated, and they had to live through a life. Now, some women are earning more than their men, and things are changing,” Neena pointed out.
Sharing that Indians should stop seeing sex as a taboo topic, Gupta said, “The more we discuss sex in the open, the less we will be ogled at, because it would be normalised. I feel very sad for women and their sexual desires,” adding, “In India, 99% or at least 95% Indian women don’t know that sex is for their enjoyment too. Many still think sex is only used to please men, and have their babies. A very miniscule minority of women have realised that sex can be enjoyable for all parties. For majority, it is not a pleasure at all.”
