Oscars 2024: Why Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone was more deserving than Emma Stone for best actress award

Lily Gladstone’s portrayal of Mollie Kyle in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her performance was path breaking. But she lost to Emma Stone who won the Best Actress award for her performance in Poor Things.

  Lily Gladstone didn’t win the Oscars 2024 best actress award for her brilliant performance in Killers of the Flower Moon as Mollie Kyle, a strong and independent Osage woman living in the 1920s Oklahoma. Many were hoping that it would have been a real path breaking news, had she won the award and would have shown the inclusivity of the Oscars function. But such was not the situation.

Lily as Mollie Kyle was relatable for many and her performance had a lot of honesty, intensity and depth. The character Mollie in _Killers of the Flower Moon_ showed her resilience with not much words and aggression, telling the audiences that there can be power in silence too.

 About Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese’s movie Killers of the Flower Moon which is based on David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction book, centers on the Reign of Terror, a term used by the Osages to state the murders of 60 community members in the late 1920s. The movie,  _Killers of the Flower Moon_ shows true crime tale and how it started through marriage between Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), a local Osage woman and Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), a white man World War I veteran who relocates to Oklahoma to work with his uncle, William Hale (Robert De Niro).

Killers of the Flower Moon is an investigation of the murders of numerous Osage people in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The movie talks about greed and to what extent people can go for the hunger of wealth. It is a masterpiece for many reasons and tries to understand the cruel mind of the white Americans.

On Lily Gladstone’s role as Mollie

Lily Gladstone who played the role of Mollie Burkhart and married Ernest. A full-blooded Osage, Mollie was convinced by Ernest’s uncle to get married to his nephew. She suffered from diabetes. Later she realised that Ernest was slow poisoning her through the insulin shots on the instruction of his uncle. She later divorced her husband and got married to a man called John Cobb in 1928. She stayed with him until her death in 1937 at the age of 50.

The 37-year-old Lily Gladstone had already been feted as the best lead actress at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and at the Golden Globes, but Lily and the rest of the Killers of the Flower Moon cast and crew were completely shut down at the Oscars 2024, as Christopher Nolan’s biopic on the father of the atomic bomb Oppenheimer took home most of the night’s top awards. And most importantly the movie Killers of the Flower Moon didn’t get a single award.

One of the critics even said that Lily Gladstone’s performance was phenomenal and one that will stay for years and years.
