She’s not Jane, but is she a virgin? Directors Prem Mistry and Debatma Mandal bring to you the Hindi adaptation of Jane: The Virgin with the ensemble of Shweta Basu Prasad, Jaaved Jaaferi, Aashim Gulati, Sonali Kulkarni. At least two actors from the cast are mostly seen in somber dramas, so to see them submit to the world of frivolousness and farce is a breather. But Roohi, played by Prasad, can do anything but breathe. Just like Good Newwz and Bad Newz, it’s about that one accident that can change your life or rather twist it. She wasn’t expected motherhood but now she’s pregnant.
There’s Aashim Gulati, fetishized and objectified once again but given the world he has been thrown into, it feels fitting. The writing credits have been shared by four people- Devanshi Shah, Ayesha Nair, Chirag Mahabal, and Suprith Kundar. We get the issues and complications of both men and women, woven with humour. And then there’s Jaaved Jaaferi too. So when you have an actor of his expertise and experience, and especially someone who understands the landscape and language, you know things will be taken care of. It’s been a while since Jaaferi landed a role that did justice to his tenacity, but here, he manages to own the scenes he’s in.
The title plays a crucial role in matching up to the madness of the story. Deepak Tijori made his directorial debut with the 2003 film called Oops. It had a lot of moments that made you say Oops. It could be the same for this show now streaming on Jio Hotstar. Anyone who decides to make a show out of Jane: The Virgin has to out the exclamation of Oops in the Hindi adaptation even though it’s an English word. The show ends on a cliffhanger which means the Oops moments of Roohi are far from over. She should surely come back, but next time, with more mirth and madness.
