Novocaine movie review: Jack Quaid-Amber Midthunder starrer gives 'Kill' vibe with ample comic-punches

Star cast: Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, and Matt Walsh

Directors: Dan Berk and Robert Olsen

What if I tell you one of your genetic disorders will be your biggest strength and weapon in a mission? Well, sounds cliche yet fun.

Nathan ‘Nate’ Caine aka Novocaine (Jack Quaid), a junior bank manager, has CIPA (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis), a rare disorder where one can’t feel pain and temperature. Nathan is an introvert with no friends except a virtual one, Roscoe Dixon (Jacob Batalon) with whom he talks while playing a video game. Because of this disorder, his life becomes way smaller as he avoids being social and follows a strict and controlled routine to avoid any serious injury.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

He has a crush on his colleague Sherry (Amber Midthunder) and slowly his life takes a pleasant turn when he goes on a date with her and eats the solid food for the first time as he’s been having liquid food all his life to avoid biting his tongue off.

On the next day, Santa-suited criminals arrive to rob the bank and take Sherry as a hostage. Now, Nate is on a mission to save his girl. While you must be thinking it’s about any cliche story, but the X-factor here is the action sequences, which are bloody and not for the faint-hearted. In fact, it’s more of a comedy version of Karan Johar’s production venture _Kill_ featuring Lakshya Lalwani and Raghav Juyal with similar deadly and reckless fights.

Director Dan Berk and Robert Olsen have kept the script sharp and entertaining as these 110 minutes feel like a roller-coaster.

Talking about the performances, Jack Quaid is effortless as Nate while Amber Midthunder luminates the screen with her presence. Jacob Batalon once again wins our hearts with his comic timing and innocent portrayal while Ray Nicholson looks spine-chilling as the lead antagonist.

On the whole, Novocaine is a fun watch but not for the faint-hearted.

Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)

Novacaine will release on 14th March
