The Roshans is indeed a nostalgic story of not only success, but immense struggle that went behind it. This four –part docuseries starts with Roshan Lal Nagrath and his journey coming to Mumbai from Gujranwala, Pakistan, in 1948 via Delhi for the love of music as he wanted to make a career in this field. For him and Rajesh Roshan later, music was bigger than the talent. Both Roshan Lal and Rajesh’s palette of knowledge on music was varied. The docu-series talks about how failure shaped each one of the Roshans’ journey.
The Roshans are indeed timeless and the Netflix docu-series shows the thick bond that exists within the family. The music made by the Roshan family is delicate and fragile as Sanjay Leela Bhansali rightly puts it. It’s indeed a delightful watch to get to know the Roshan family. Apart from watching the Roshans speak about their family and craft, we have Shatrughan Sinha, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar, Anupam Kher Javed, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, Abhishek Bachchan, Asha Bhosle, Suman Kalyanpuri, Sudha Malhotra, Usha Mangeshkar, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam and so many other artists talk highly about their career, but also as human beings.
Rajesh Roshan’s collaborations with Dev Anand was the most successful point of his career. In one of the episodes, Asha Bhosle reveals that even R.D. Burman admired Rajesh Roshan’s work. There hasn’t been a single kid those days who has not danced to Sara Zamana Haseeno Ka Deewana. But towards the end of his career with new people coming in, the industry started ignoring him. Rajesh Roshan loved his work, but he wasn’t a man who would go to producers’ houses in search of work.
Rakesh Roshan though was an unsuccessful actor who couldn’t make it big, but as a director he was hugely successful. In fact, he realised later that direction was his true calling. As Zoya Akhtar rightly says, “He used to take up unlikely subjects and communicate to the mass Hindi audience.” He lived his dream through his son, Hrithik Roshan making him one of the most successful actors in Bollywood. Karan Johar mentions in Netflix’s The Roshans, how each generation contributed to the success of Indian cinema.
Vicky Kaushal rightly says, “Hrithik Roshan was like a storm that came into our lives.” He was indeed a complete package that was required to be a hero. He was sensational and the biggest superstar the industry has ever seen and extremely hardworking. Describing Hrithik, Sanjay Leela Bhansali says, “Eccentric, difficult, but he is magical.”
The best thing about Netflix’s docuseries is that it’s very realistic and they are talking about every aspect of their life including their smallest achievements, struggles, financial insecurities. The series doesn’t glorify the Roshans, rather it takes a very simple and realistic approach to their life. And the best thing is the packaging of the whole docu-series. Hrithik Roshan’s rise to fame with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai will make your heart thump with pride.
