Courtroom drama could never have been this entertaining without the entire cast of Maamla Legal Hai. And not just entertaining, it’s witty too. Directed by Rahul Pandey, and written by Kunal Aneja and Saurabh Khanna is a complete cocktail of real life cases. It gives a glimpse as to what happens in the courts of Hindi heartland and their real cases and their problems.
Netflix’s Maamla Legal Hai very clearly shows that not all is bad and evil and that everything can be sorted with a clear heart and dash of fun. Just that some things in life should be left in the hands of time. Things that you truly deserve will definitely come to you, just that sometimes it takes a little longer.
Ravi Kishan truly sparkles as advocate VD Tyagi. With a fun twist, the show explores the lives of lawyers and their struggles. Some lawyers want to make it big and want to be known for their work, while some want to serve the people of the Hindi heartland and look into the real problems of the place and its people.
The show starts with the voiceover of Vijay Raaz when he says “jinke coat kaale hai magar dil kaala nahi hai” (their coats might be black, but not their hearts). This line truly reflects the entire mood of the show. We get to meet different types of lawyers, some who have a chamber for themselves, some who sits on the benches of the parking area outside the court and some under the tress. And mind you all their struggles are real even those sitting at the helm of the judiciary affairs.
Nidhi Bisht who plays the role of Sujata Negi has been sitting on the benches outside the court for years in the hope that someday she too will get a chamber and get settled in life. None of the lawyers shown in Netflix ’s _Maamla Legal Hai_ is black or white. All are different shades of grey.
Ambitious VD Tyagi (Ravi Kishan), who is the president of Patparganj Bar Association and dreams of becoming an Attorney General of India too is not always a clean hearted person. A sharp lawyer who knows how to find loopholes in the legal system to win cases. He knows how to twist and turn things in his favour. He uses one of his juniors who is a Harvard law school return to his advantage when she comes in the hope of getting a place for herself to start her legal practice. He makes her write an article as an assignment and then later uses the article under his own name in the newspaper. This is a common practice for not only in the legal field, but areas too.
No unnecessary melodrama, Maamla Legal Hai touches upon the fact as to what is the reason behind Tyagi being the person he is. There is a backstory to his cunningness and he truly is a survivor. The way Ravi Kishan plays with words and his dialogue delivery in the entire show and his expression when he is dealing with his juniors or when he is fighting a case is impeccable. The more I see his recent performances, whether it is Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies or here in this show, you can’t stop becoming a fan of his craft.
In this show nobody is trying to over shine anybody. Though Ravi Kishan is the main lead, everybody has an equally important role to play. Each character is a hero in its own right!
