Captain Devi Sharan, the pilot of IC 814 from Kathmandu to Delhi was bringing home honeymooners, holiday-makers and businessmen. It was the last Christmas Eve of the millennium and he was supposed to go on a vacation with his family. But life had something else in store for him. His plane was hijacked by five masked men. IC 814 had 188 passengers and the crew. It was in fact the longest hijack drama.
According to reports and according to the book written by Captain Devi Sharan, the scariest moment Sharan had during the entire episode was when the Lahore ATC refused his request for an emergency landing and switched off all emergency lights. With the aircraft dangerously low on fuel, crash-landing was the only option.
Why did the IC 814, the Kandahar hijack , happen?
Throughout those eight days, Captain Devi Sharan kept his calm because he knew that the lives of so many people were at stake. The hijackers had just one single aim and that was to free one of the most dangerous terrorists, Maulana Masood Azhar. Masood was jailed in India for more than four years. Netflix’s show mentions that Masood was sure that he will be freed and that was the entire reason that IC 814 was hijacked.
