Bhansali is known for his lavish and intoxicating visuals. A place where women are trained to entice men, the thrilling trailer transports viewers to the sizzling district of _Heeramandi_ , where the one and only Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala) rules over an elite house of courtesans. She schemes, fearing no one — until the return of her late nemesis’ daughter, Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), brings tensions in the house to a boil. The show draws inspiration from real historical events.
Going back to history, during the Mughal era, women predominantly from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan were brought to Heeramandi to perform Kathak dances to entertain the Mughal rulers. Netflix’s Heeramandi trailer shows how the British transformed this place into a hub for prostitution.
Outside, the city is also roiling, with revolutionaries demanding India’s freedom from British rule, with Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari), one of Mallikajaan’s daughters, joining the fight for freedom. Meanwhile, Mallikajaan’s youngest, Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal), dreams of love with the son of a nawab (nobleman), Tajdar (Taha Shah Badussha), and yearns to break out of Heeramandi. It’s a world where tawaifs have the power to control the nawabs who visit them.
As betrayal mounts and forbidden desires clash with societal norms, the struggle for pre-independent India’s freedom comes to a boiling point. Against this backdrop, Mallikajaan and Fareedan are locked in an epic battle for the title of the huzoor, or the lady, of Heeramandi. Who will finally reign?
The series is set in Heeramandi, Lahore, British India, where Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala) reigns an elite house of courtesans. She reigns supreme and no one can stop her until, Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), brings tensions in the house to a boil.
Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari), one of Mallikajaan’s daughters, joins the fight for freedom. Mallikajaan’s youngest, Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal), is in love with the son of a nobleman, Tajdar (Taha Shah Badussha), and is desperate to break out of Heeramandi. With freedom struggle in the backdrop, for Mallikajaan and Fareedan it’s a battle for the title of the huzoor or the lady of Heeramandi. It’s good to see Fardeen Khan making his spectacular return to the screen as Wali Mohammed in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. We can’t obviously wait to see him perform.
