In the world of artificial intelligence, Jennifer Lopez starer Netflix’s Atlas lacked the most needed punch of a tight script. The movie could have been so much better. But Atlas was a real low for Netflix. A futuristic film requires much more meat, which Atlas clearly lacked. Even Lopez playing the titular character couldn’t save the loosely written film.
Written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite and directed by Brad Peyton, who previously helmed San Andreas and Rampage, Atlas lacks originality and looks like an aggregation of several films. Going back to the story, Lopez plays the role of a government analyst who is thrown to a distant world on a quest to defeat her oldest enemy: the robot warrior who upended her life. The character played by her is that of a loner who finds it difficult to trust anybody around her. She doesn’t like anything to do with AI, but she is put in such a situation that she doesn’t have a choice. There is a reason for her vehemently disliking artificial intelligence. The film is about understanding a woman who fails to trust people because of a backstory where she was badly used to snatch away her near and dear ones.
Atlas is also about self-discovery, learning to let go and moving on in life. It is a story of friendship and like the way Lopez sees all movies like a love story, this too is like one of them. What the story lacks is the exploration of the back story leaving the audiences in a haze and underusing brilliant actors like Jennifer Lopez.
