Amar Singh Chamkila was one of the most popular singers of Punjab. In the 80s, when everyone was making songs on conventional topics, Amar Singh Chamkila thought differently and made songs that were relatable and talked about the day-to-day problems of rural Punjab. Many a times his lyrics were suggestive too.
Controversial lyrics
His lyrics were often considered to be dirty and a bad influence on the youngsters. It talked a lot about his masculinity, drug abuse, and alcoholism going to the extent of commodifying women. Many felt his lyrics were distasteful. But Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila clearly shows that he sang these songs on public demand. So what could have been the cause of him being killed and who were the people behind it? That I guess is still a mystery.
There are different theories floating. One of them was Chamkila’s provocative and controversial lyrics which probably angered many orthodox people and different religious groups. And again he touched upon certain sensitive topics which were a taboo those days. In one of his songs he spoke about the Hindu-Muslim conflicts.
Attacked by the militants
That was the time when it was the militancy period in the state of Punjab. Many Khalistani leaders didn’t like his suggestive lyrics. Many even threatened him and he had to shut their mouths with money. Towards the end, Chamkila became fearless and he stopped paying them. This could have been one of the reasons he and his wife, Amarjot Kaur were gunned down by the militants.
Professional rivalry
Not only in Punjab, Amar Singh Chamkila was hugely popular all over the world. He and his wife used to charge a huge amount of money per show. Some say that probably his competitors killed him out of jealousy.
