Mr & Mrs Smith review: Donald Glover & Maya Erskine starrer is a perfect blend of kickass action & joyful romance

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr and Mrs Smith, which released in 2005, is one of the most loved spy action comedies in Hollywood. While it was a box office blockbuster, many experts called it a ‘missed opportunity’ in terms of its execution. Almost, after 20 years, it got a second chance as it turned into an eight-part series (apt decision), which didn’t only hit the bullseye but also paid homage most charmingly.

Talking about the plot (which you know if you have seen the original one), it is about a couple, who are working for a rival spy company and are pitted against each other. It narrates the relationship dynamic of two strangers-turned-spies-turned-spouses.

John (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erksine) are matched by a mysterious agency and in return, they need to rub away their pasts for a job, which has killing perks. In each episode, the couple is sent on a high-risk mission. While they work and coordinate greatly with each other, we see the journey from being strangers to colleagues and finally lovers like a breath of fresh air.

The small and strange intricacies and intimacies do wonder for the show. The perfect mix of grit and wit adds high value and credit for that goes to Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover. The action doesn’t dominates the emotions. In fact, it takes the drama to another level.

Talking about the performances, it looks like Glover and Erskine were born to play this role as their camaraderie and comfort with each other make you believe that the world is a better place with their romance. The rest of the cast including Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, Ron Perlman, and Sarah Paulson among others join the party and make _Mr and Mrs Smith_ even better with their presence.
