Malaika Arora: 'I found being called an 'item girl' derogatory, being complimented by Helen was...'

Malaika Arora is one of the most iconic dancers of Bollywood who has done some of the most unforgettable dance numbers in films like Dil Se, Kaal, Dabangg, and Housefull 2. Talking about being called an ‘item girl’, the actress had to say something.

Malaika said, “I’ve been a part of some fantastic songs but people used to come and ask me How do you feel when people call your songs Item?’”

She added, “After a point it got very annoying. It gave a very derogatory context. So I’m glad it has now gone away. I have had a fantastic time being a part of all these item songs. Earlier I never looked at it like that, it didn’t cross my mind till it started being projected like that.”

She also spoke about the compliments she has received for her dance from none other than Helen. “When stalwarts from the industry like Amitabh Bachchan praise you it’s amazing. But Helen ji complimenting me was my ultimate pleasure. For me she has been the most iconic dancer ever. When she said I do justice to all her songs, I was very happy,” revealed Malaika.

On her scary fan encounter

Malaika Arora, who faced life-changing events (not in a good way) in 2024: the loss of her father, Anil Arora and her breakup with Arjun Kapoor after seven years of relationship, has shared a note of what this year has taught her.

But before that, the actress has also spoken about a scary fan encounter she went through. “I had no idea, no clue, nothing… she was just sitting there," Malaika said, still visibly unnerved by the memory. “She came to talk to me, but I got a little scared, I’ll be very honest."
