Avinash Tiwary was last seen in Madgaon Express that was directed by Kunal Kemmu. It’a running successfully in cinemas and the actor is elated with the response.
On his acting process
In my set, over a period of time, yes as an actor. I think in acting, what has really happened is it gives me an opportunity to grow mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, I don’t think there is any other profession that allows you this opportunity. I think personally, I would like to believe that with the parts that I have played and the sincerity that I have been into it, I have been able to have a better human understanding. I think it has allowed me to understand the sense of society and how people think, how humans behave there, they have behaviors. The fact that you get to read so many scripts allows you to get inside into how it should kind of segments in society’s function, different starters of society. So I think it has been a very enriching experience for me as an actor. When I started off, I was just a young boy who just wanted to do well in life. But I think I turned out to be much more sensitive than what I was when I started off.
On Kunal Kemmu as the director
I think the clarity. You know, I have made a career out of working with first time directors. And Kunal is someone who ever walks in some kind of nervousness, some kind of an element of anxiety. But considering he has spent so much time on set, I think it just keeps on naturally. It was just an extension for him to just walk on to the set, had the clarity of what he wanted in the film, how he wanted it, just asked us to deliver it, we did our job to our capabilities and it just went so smooth. The fact that it could just happen so smoothly in a day is something that is very, very rare and that is very, very unique about Kunal’s direction. The clarity of the vision is something, is truly envy.
On his chemistry with Divyendu Sharma and Pratik Gandhi
I think all three of us, very honestly, all three of us connected from the very first day. We had a narration when we met for the first time, then we decided to go to Alibaug, and Nora also joined us, Kunal was there, and we decided to go there and spend time for a couple of days. We played cricket, we played pool, we played table tennis, we did a lot of readings, and nothing in that, we just, I think it was, for me it was we playing cricket, and when you are bowling and you are able to take that wicket, you are able to hit sixes on the bowling, that was the moment I found out that I am their friend, and it’s been like how it is with school friends, we would everyday post work, sit down, get together, spend time, spend a couple of parts together, get back to shoot again, and it has maintained since it’s almost one and a half years now, and we’ve been the same.
On comparisons with Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
I don’t know, I don’t necessarily feel it’s a hurt that they are driven by, it’s just that, it can be a responsibility, it can be, it can be having different desires and aspirations, like if you look at Dodo who don’t really have any aspirations, and Pinkya was someone who was constantly driven in his life by his parents, it was only Ayush who was a responsible guy right from the beginning, it was not that some pain or some tragedy made him a responsible guy, someone who was always the alpha in the group, right from the start of it, and someone who wanted to make a career out of it, and he goes ahead and does that. So I think that way the characterizations are different, but in a three-friend film, you’d always see a different kind of rhythm, which every character will have, and yes, you’re right, as far as Ayush is concerned, his segment would be something similar to it. A little to own the down. A more straight-jacketed part compared to the other two, and you can say probably Bradley Cooper in The Hangover, you know those segments that you would fall in, but I don’t necessarily think it’s a tragedy, you’re driving them.
On the comedy in Madgaon Express
Madgaon Express is a film that when you see it, you know that this can happen to you, so you don’t desire it. You’re almost like, oh, this can happen to me. And hence, when you’re laughing at the tragedy of what you’re seeing at, you’re also kind of saying, oh, you know, this is too close for us. So I think it has a certain kind of, whichever you feed for the characters, you’re almost scared for them, you’re also packing them, there’s certain amount of suspense with what is happening, and all through this, there is laughter, so I think it all has come together very well for them.
On his next projects
So I have two more releases this year, and the next one has already been announced. It’s called The Mehta Boys. It’s directed by Boman Irani. It’s written by a guy who wrote Birdman, Alex, and I just feel very, very proud to be part of the written by an Academy Award winner, because that’s how the script came to me, and directed by one of the finest actors of our country. It’s a far from some story, I think it’s very hard for me, and I think you’ll love the two men.
