Lokesh Kanagaraj directed Kaithi in 2019. The film starring Karthi was not expected to mark the inception of a planned cinematic universe. However, with the release of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, the director delighted fans as it featured characters from Kaithi. Following the interesting revelation, fans introduced the term the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). Lokesh, soon, rose to prominence and became the first South Indian director to create a shared universe. As of now, the LCU comprises Kaithi, Vikram, and the recent addition, _Leo_ .
Vikram, in the end, introduces Rolex, portrayed by Suriya. The film’s conclusion also gave references to Dilli, Karthi’s character from Kaithi. Conversely, Leo concluded with the protagonist receiving a call from Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, summoning him to join the fight against drug trafficking. The conclusion of both films led fans to speculate on a future crossover between all three protagonists. As reported by News18, the LCU may not extend much further, with Vikram 2 being its final instalment.
Kaithi 2, the fourth instalment in the LCU, is expected to go on floors by late 2024 and the director will be dedicating the first half of the following year to the same. Kaithi 2 will delve into the backstory of Karthi’s character, Dilli. Following Kaithi 2, Lokesh will be working on a spin-off film centred on Suriya’s character, Rolex, from Vikram and then will release Vikram 2, the last film of the LCU.
Meanwhile, Narain, known for his work in the Telugu and Tamil film industries, confirmed that Lokesh is working on a 10-minute short film apart from his film projects. The short film will reportedly delve into the origins of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe.
